  • Cleaning old 8mm film

The term "newbie" doesn't begin to describe me. But, I just found a box of 8mm and Super 8 family movies from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. There are probably over 100 3 inch reels in the box. I am part of a very large family (7 kids) and everyone is excited to try to get these transferred to digital. I think I am going to purchase a Magnasonic FS81 unit for conversion, but as I have researched this topic I see that it is highly recommended to clean and lubricate old 8mm film before digitizing. I see several videos and websites that show people using hand-crank rewinders, micro-fiber cloth and cleaning solution to do this. But, I cannot find any place on the internet where I can purchase a hand-crank rewinder to accomplish the needed cleaning. I would be most grateful for any leads or advice on how to get this done. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Hope it helps.
I use Isopropyl to clean vintage films and let dry prior to scanning/ film trasfer.

Once transfer is complete use FilmGuard to finish the job. It will help lubricate your old films and protect them during projection.

Search eBay for a dual 8 editor. You can find them fairly cheap and should serve the purpose for the hand cranked rewinds. Good luck.

Thanks to Jim Seaburg for the tip to search Ebay for a dual 8 editor. I had searched Ebay for hand rewinders, and found nothing. But when I searched for dual 8 mm film editors, I found many, and have ordered one. So, thank you Jim. And thanks Lee for tips on cleaning my old 8 mm films.

As I am in Finland, Filmrenew is out, they do not send it to Finland and FilmGuard seems to be out of stock, I wonder if they send it to Finland either. It is pretty impossible to get good stuff from Europe or USA because these liquids are of some degree harmful or dangerous to send via Post.
