  • Telecine of an 18fps film at 24fps

Has anyone been experimenting with doing a telecine of an 18fps film with the projector set to 24fps?
This could save quite some time if you need to transfer loads of footage.

    That really depends...

If your setup is quartz-locked speed so that 24fps really means 24.000 fps, not some 24fps and whereabout, then yes - running both projector and video camera at EXACTLY 24fps may save time. Otherwise you'll get blended frames while capturing AND possibly more blended frames while doing the speed change when editing.

If exporting the work at current standard speed (for example 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, or 60 fps) that would definitely means frame resampling, thus even more blended frames.

If you can capture 18 frames with the global shutter then it may be possible to capture at 24 if your camera has 24 setting and the old machine can go that high. The exposure is shorter so there could be some issues related to that. Once done you just change the video FPS setting to 18. The FPS change is just a number that the player uses and there are no added or subtracted frames. At least that is how VirtualDub does it. I tested that. The issue however can be with the wear and tear of the film.
