  • MLB Playoffs -- Bob Costas

Did anyone catch the Bob Costas Show - -co-starring the Yankees and Royals? Lots of negative press -- similar to what he's received the last few years. I had to shut the sound off several times.

How many times do we need to hear:
"The last to do that -- Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays."
"No no has ever done that since -- Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Lou Gehrig."
"The last time someone did that in the post-season -- Joe Dimaggio, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. And of course back then, the only post-season games were in the World Series."

"3-2 count. And Aaron Judge fouls it back. The only other player to foul a pitch off on a 3-2 count, in the 4th inning, of game 2 of a series in the post-season, in a year in which he led the league in home runs -- Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays."

"While the pitching coach heads to the mound, let me tell you about a game in 1892 pitched by Willy H. Hobson, where he tossed 12 scoreless innings in a game his team eventually lost..."

I'm honestly not a big baseball fan, but I would personally LOVE hearing someone who knows so much about the game, that they can rattle off statistics about the game that I'd never know. It makes the game that much more of an experience.

Im a Cincinnati Reds fan, so I don't have to worry about listening to post season color commentary! Hahah.

But in regards to your post, I agree, Bob Costas isn't one of my favorites for post season baseball.

Differences of opinions are funny. I like Bob Costas. I love baseball and am really enjoying the playoffs after many years of not watching any of it. The new technology adds a lot to the enjoyment. Speeds of pitch, speed off the bat, arc of the home run etc pretty cool...Plus I think the new rules are good although I never liked the Designated hitter thing, always liked to see the pitchers up at the plate. But hey. It might be a generational thing but Costas has a lot of facts in his head and is pretty quick witted and witty at times. No big deal, enjoy baseball. Want to read some good baseball literature read some Ring Lardner. That'll take ya back to the 1920's bush league stuff. "You Know Me Al" and "Alibi Ike" are really funny, and this stuff was written a hundred years ago!

"As the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals battled during the ALDS, Bob Costas babbled on in the TBS broadcast booth.

Sometimes, he was on topic. Other times, he rambled on about absolutely anything and everything. At one point, he even began quoting Mark Twain."

The Yankee-Cleveland series on TBS still has Ron Darling, but no Bob Costas.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The game went into extra innings a few nights ago, but there was no ghost runner! Only game this post-season to go extra innings so far.

I'm not saying the ghost runner is good or bad, but the "in-game" rules in the post-season should be the same as for the regular season. Makes no sense to change it for the post-season. The ghost runner was a tactic to help shorten games, as was the pitch-clock, which is still enforced in the post-season -- so they didn't change that.

Thankfully, he's not doing the Yankees/Dodgers World Series!!!

Someone needs to tell Costas that every game is not an invitation to make it "Ken Burns Baseball."
