  • Ged Jones' Derann Vaults is back - as a website

Ged lost his Facebook group, The Derann Vaults, a few months back. Years of posting lost with no explanation from Facebook. But luckily Ged had saved all his material, and behind the scenes I have helped Ged for a few months making a new website that can not be deleted by any major internet company!

At the time of launch there are 466 posts and more than 5000 pictures and scanned pages, but that's not even all he had on Facebook, so more is to come in the days to follow. The PDFs of catalogs and magazines can be viewed on the page, but they can also be downloaded.

With his work in the industry, this is a very unique site to be enjoyed by all collectors but also an important preservation of history!

Go to derannvaults.uk to see his new site!

    Eivind,

A huge thank you for assisting Ged in setting up Derann Vaults. Just like Super8database, there's much to explore and enjoy.

This terrific news! Already lots to look at and with more to come I think it'll become another gem of a website for collectors. Many thanks to all concerned.

Great site. Yes, fame at last. Shame they spelt my surname wrong. 🥺

Could you point me to the error so it can be corrected, please?

                This is excellent!

My interactions with Derann were in a way life changing. Once I discovered them, I had the choice of either ignoring a source of brand-new prints or going into sound. I'll have to admit I went through all sorts of denial and bargaining (Yes, you can show a sound print on a silent machine, but...). Once I jumped that obstacle, film-collecting changed radically for me.

This is about much more than just having speakers next to my (much bigger) screen. That's what got me involved with this forum and a few years later CineSea. I've made good friends and have a lot of wonderful memories, not only for myself but my family as well. (When your wife and kids have positive feelings about your hobby, that is a huge plus!)

I know myself: I'd gone 25 years with silent projection and without that major temptation I just might still be!
(-bet I'd be up past maybe a hundred films by now!)
                .

It is very nice to see this on line. And not to mention it is something that after all the hard work....Facebook can't take it down for no reason!

This one survived. On Derann’s last day, my other half asked Ged about it and he told her to ask Adrian as it belonged to him. It came home with us…

                          That's good work, Rob!

There's a lot of discussion lately about how film collectors preserve History. You two did your part that day

-that Neon looked really nice, but I guess a little permanent too!

Steve, I just couldn't bear the thought of it going into a skip, which I suspect would have happened. It was such a sad day to be there when Derann closed their doors, but this still makes me smile and reminds me of the fantastic times I had dealing with Derann. It was at least nice to take a real memento away that day. Sure, its a bit dog-eared, but I love it all the same.

Funny thing; here in the UK we have a well known sofa company called DFS and I've had a few comments from visitors as to why I have a sofa firm sign up...how I love to re-educate them!

Because of certain...geographical barriers, I couldn't be there myself that last day, so I did the best I could to take it back to when I first had sound. I used my first sound projector and showed the first three Derann prints I ever owned: no external sound system and no anamorphic (-which was a sacrifice because one of these films was 'scope!).

I even moved back downstairs and set up the tripod screen I started out with. In an earlier era, my Dad showed slides on it.

My (then) 9 year old drifted down the stairs and asked "What are you doing down here?"

I told him "Just remembering.". He'd lived with film in the house his whole life and didn't understand what Derann's departure meant. From his perspective half the households in town must have had a little theater!

(-then again, given the time difference I was probably too late anyway!)
