  • Negative scanner

I’m thinking about getting a negative scanner I’m finding a lot of old b/w negatives at my moms who passed away last month has anyone had any luck with any brand? I’m looking at either the magnasonic or the Kodak. Thanks for any info.

The trick would be to find one that handles multiple film formats (110, 120, 35mm ....).

Get one that has an infrared channel (to automatically remove dust and scratches) and that comes with SilverFast (or at least VueScan).
When you have got a lot of negatives, then get one with a motorized film advance.

      Or something similar…

Over the years, I have been asked about Slide/Neg/Photo scanning and investigated various bit of kit. None that were affordable ticked all the boxes and some were over priced and under speced. Some could not handle the old size negs, only 35mm.

For the odd photo my Canon MP does an adequate job BUT even if you have 200 negs, my local photographic shop, with in-house processing has a much higher standard of kit than I could warrant and I point enquiries in that direction.
Just throwing in an alternative to check out in your area
        .

Why should the scanner be so negative? Why not be a positive piece of equipment? 😀

Most of the negatives are 120 size and unfortunately there are no scanners that take that size and for taking them to a cvs or other place they use third party developers and I don’t get the negatives back. May have to search abit more.

I have seen people adapting flatbead document scanners with a device to reflect the light back through the slide/negative. I'm not sure how good the results are. My experiments weren't very good but scnners have improved since I did that. You would also have to cope with colour correctiopn for Masked Colour Negative (orange) negatives. Some flatbed scnners come with light panels and software to scane slides/negatives, but I've only seen them for 35mm recently.

They sell light boxes to use with your camera to copy negatives/slides. Here is one:

You don't need a different scanner for negatives/positives and PLEASE do not get a reflecta! If the quality of their slide scanner is similar to their super 8 solutions then you would be better off using your phone...
