  • Judging the Oscars 2026

Have I missed something here? It will now be mandatory for the judges to view ALL the nominations. Maybe someone can explain how it was done for the previous hundred years.πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„

Based on what Michael Caine said in his book all Academy voters are sent complimentary DVDs to view prior to voting. Now he made a point of watching nominated movies but who knows what the others do.

He took more interest in the acting categories being an actor rather than other nominations were name recognition people he worked with or liked played a role.

I think in the old days special screenings in cinemas were held for academy members.

A new requirement: Watch before you vote

One of the most consequential changes affects how members can cast their final votes. For the first time, Oscar voters will be locked out of voting in specific categories unless they can prove they’ve watched all the nominated films in those categories. While the Academy previously operated on an honor system, this policy now enforces transparency using its private streaming platform, the Academy Screening Room.

If members view films at public events, festivals, or screenings outside the platform, they must submit detailed forms declaring the time and place of viewing. This approach, inspired by similar practices at the BAFTA Awards, aims to reduce uninformed or β€œcoattail” voting, ensuring that only well-informed opinions shape Oscar outcomes.

Poor souls imagine being forced to watch some of the crap that is nominated. Wonder can they fast forward. Some of the seniors will be pushed to remember what they’re watched like 5 minutes after it has finished.

I have to give someone credit for actually holding the members accountable. There are probably a lot of past "contenders", that are shaking their heads, saying, " What!?! They may have not even watched my nominated film before they passed a freaking vote?! ".
