  • Progress on the new forum.

I wasn't sure which section of the forum to put this comment in but this'll be as good as any place.
I feel the urge to apologise for my comments on the intro of the new forum, in which I said that it seemed a little amateurish in comparison with the old but it is establishing itself well. I suppose I'm an old stick in the mud!
Only gripes I may now have is that it would be nice to know the location of each contributor and perhaps make the print a little larger?
It's still my main scource of info on things film!

I agree with Allan's comment about the location of a member being shown.

I'm with you both if it were possible because?

If we had locations I do think members would be more aware of the language barriers which can oft be misunderstood. If we know the country we can make extra allowances and understand more.

A simple example would be in the UK Standard 8mm is generally called Regular 8mm in beloved usa.

That's my take on it anyway. God bless.

In an earlier thread both Brad & I expressed our preference to have a location field underneath each member's name. The issue was getting the software to cooperate. Mathew James, who is familiar with this software, kindly gave assistance however it is not as easy as checking a box that says "Display Location Field". We are working on it....

Currently, location information can be seen in member's profiles by clicking on the member's name. I do need to point out that the majority of members have not filled in their location information. For instance, in this thread I do see that Maurice has.

It would be helpful if members would add that information. I realize this has taken some time and I appreciate your patience. I hope to be able to report soon on progress made in this area.

          Hi All,
          Thanx Doug!
The issue may be that the forum's software, vbulletin 5.X.X, does not have all the bells and whistles as earlier versions of vbulletin do. thus some things are not on by default. For example, If you look in your user settings, found at the top right of this page under the drop down by your name(when logged in).... halfway down the page you will see a field that says 'Location'.. where you can enter your location info. As Doug mentions, we should all have this filled now, if you haven't filled it yet.
Once Brad and Doug modify the default template(if they so choose to do so)... then these filled location fields will populate under the avatar. if we don't fill in info, once this is turned on, certain users locations would remain empty.

This is not always an easy tweak. It is nerve racking(at least for me) to potentially bring down a forum if there is a mess up, and believe me, forum software is a fickle as they come....

          Now, one solution....
I sent some info to Doug already which Brad will have, but here is some more to consider:

          a) I believe the version of vBulletin used on this forum may be customized- necessarily tweaked for security purposes...however,

In a default installation, location is field2. So, One would...

Go to Styles -> Style Manager. Add a a new template for your style from the drop down menu. Name it user_profile_fields. Add this code:

Name:	code1.jpg
Views:	560
Size:	33.4 KB
ID:	11775
Then go to Hooks & Templates -> Manage Templates and add a new Template Hook.
          1. Give it a name.
          2. Set the Hook Location to conversation_userstats.
          3. For the template name use user_profile_fields
          4. In the Hook Arguments field add conversation=conversation.
          5. Make sure your hook is active and save it.
          b) Here is a link to a fella who created a MOD package(for admins) to add to vBulletin, in order to add custom fields, such as location etc....

          Hope this helps!

              Your very welcome!
I am not sure why my link to the Mod above didn't work. Here it is again:

I've added the location to my profile as suggested. Sorry for the omission.
Perhaps a cheeky way around the tech problems would be to register the location with your name? EG., My name would be Allan Broadfield (London UK)?
If your name was extraordinarily long it could be a problem,of course!

Am I the only one experimenting since one day or two problems with the forum on my phone ? On my computer, everything is ok but it's impossible to access to the forum on my mobile phone.

                    Hi Dominique,

Starting on Friday, there has been an issue with Cloudflare’s DNS service that has affected many sites in the US and Northern Europe.

One thing I would like to see is that when we write something and someone else press the like button I would like to be able to know who that person was who liked it

Is there again a limitation in the picture size ? I've just tried to upload two pictures and had the following error message : "File exceeds PHP's file-size limit of 2.00 MB. Those two pictures were taken with my phone, as many others I could, until now, upload without any problem on the new version of the forum.

Sorry about the difficulty. I'll check into this.
