  • Most overrated films ...

OK, this could potentially be divisive, but everybody, of course, is completely allowed to their opinions, ( I wouldn't be surprised if someone out there would even think "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is the greatest thing to ever be placed on film!?!), but what is your opinion? My first selection would be "2001 : A Space Odyssey". Yes, groundbreaking special effects ... but boring as hell and waaay too long, too drawn out, and I'm a person who likes a good epic. Second selection "Dr Zivago" waaay too long romance (!?) about a fella who can't stay true to one woman, amidst the Russian revolution. Lovely, sometimes stunning photography, but too drawn out. Three (final one) The series of Godfather films. Would work these days as a mini-series, but waaay too long and drawn out. I like gangster films, but I'd watch "Dillenger" any day of the week over any of the "Godfather" films, and have a difficult time getting why they are so revered. Your opinions?

Yeah, Dr. Zhivago…are we supposed to care about this guy? Lol! Mulholland Drive. I’ve had several disagreements with people over this one. Wot a load…ha ha…

Then again, when I was younger I was bored to pieces by Blade Runner and yet now I absolutely love it.

Sometimes I think it really can affect how you perceive a film given when and how you see it.

I agree about ZHIVAGO as well. But THE GODFATHER films (even sections of part three) are, for me, fantastic character studies, serving as timeless commentary on why it's entirely possible for idealists to become pragmatists, fall into new ways of thinking, make the decisions they do. I actually think that if Shakespeare were alive today, these films would be high on his top ten list as they're just as in-depth and developed as his best works can be.

I find most well-reviewed Marvel films to be highly overrated, though – and that's not about snobbery. For me they have all the engagement of a 1990s Hallmark TV movie. They're "samey" in look, too long, and most lack a dynamite musical identity that would help put them over the top. Please give me a Chris Reeve Superman film any day!

2001 yes struggled to get through it once. Totally overrated.

Doctor Zhivago even the 3x400 seemed like 3 hours. Managed to watch all of it once.

Ten Commandments way too long. Boredom until 2/3 through the movie then it actually was watchable. 3x400 was actually good cutdown.

Gone with the Wind a hour too long . A Selznick over indulgence.

The Deer Hunter Watched the endless wedding scene got to them hunting prior to going to Vietnam gave up as it was soooo boring.

Any Marvel movie I wouldn’t watch there is a reason why they are based on comics sorry graphic novels LOL.

              Good point, Brian.

I am specifically referring to Star Wars IV - A New Hope. The first release (in any version). It had already achieved mega cult status well before the next instalment was released. I have since seen it about 3 times, the most recent at Blackpool a year or two back in super 8 scope....... and I STILL cannot see what all the fuss was about. It is good, granted, but not THAT good.
I have not given up on it yet, so please everybody give me a little credit. I have invested in the blu ray box set of the first SIX films, plus The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi (all cheapy charity shop purchases!) so I will, at some point in the future, watch them all in chronological order and see if I need they can persuade me to change my point of view.

In the meantime..... where is my copy of Close Encounters.........!!

Star Wars, while not a perfect film, came out at just the right time, an innocent old school adventure film, in the the midst of an already jaded Hollywood. It was just there to entertain, not a message film, and it just hit a chord with people, but your right, there are people that, whether in retaliation for so many people loving it ( and hating it for that very reason, just to be different), dislike it, or, quite frankly, just not liking it out of just not being into that kind of no message, doing nothing but entertaining the masses, fun drivel! 😁. I can certainly see it being considered way overrated, yet winning a butt load of Oscars. However, Oscar, doesn't automatically lead to something being good, as we often shake our collective heads over, as we watch them and ask ourselves, "What did they see, that we don't see?!". I mean, there has to be some people who ask, "And just why didn't "Plan 9 From Outer Space win best picture?! I mean, it has Bela Lugosi!!"

                  Hi all,

I have not posted for an age as I don’t really collect cine anymore but I do enjoy reading posts here from time to time.

I must admit - my youngest son will be in total opposition to me - BUT … I found Star Wars totally overrated to me and a complete turn off. Just could not get it. I remember when it first came to my home town on first release in the 70’s. There were lines around the block. Ironically, my girlfriend’s Father was the main Cinema manager in the town for both ABC cinemas and I could get in free to any movie at this time.. just never could be bothered with it. I tried to watch it - all the episodes - in later years and still never taken to it.

I was far more impressed with “ real” originality like “ Blade Runner”, etc.

My favourite films though of the 70’s were easy though..” Jaws”; “ The Sting” and John Wayne’s last film the very underrated “ Shootist”.

take care and happy viewing whatever media you choose’

                  ”Silvo”🎸👍

For me, the first Star Wars was good, the second like episode 3 of a Dr who four parter and Revenge better. I though they were good films, but didn't warrant the fuss made over them,

                        Hi Mark

Great to see you posting again. Yes, I would agree with you on Star Wars. Neat movie but overrated and now flogged to death by Disney. Can you imagine if he had made Flash Gordon as planned but couldn’t get the rights.

Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies are another franchise that is hyped beyond their importance. They could well be have been condensed. They seem to spend 6 hours in a bloody forest. Cant take anything serious with James Nesbitt.

Star Trek movies let’s be honest most of them are chronic or rehashes of tv episodes.

James Bond movies after the first three in the series apart from a few decent ones when a new Bond was introduced they are basically to same script written on a matchbox.

Matrix movies watched all 3 on a Blu Ray set. Never again.

Think I’ve covered all the beloveds.

                        Mike

Logistics (2012). I watched it twice and still don't understand it. What kind of idiot would make such a film?

The longest movie ever made is "Logistics," which has a runtime of 51,420 minutes, or 857 hours (35 days and 17 hours). This experimental film was created by Erika Magnusson and Daniel Andersson in 2012.
It has an IMDB rating of 6.5
                          https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8273150/

Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) only got an IMDB score of 3.9

I agree with Osi Osgood to date I still don't understand those who praise 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I watched it once and got bored instantly!

What surprised me even more is that since this film is available in Super 8mm, it will fetch a fairly high price on the market. I sometimes wondered if these buyers bought it for its cult status or if they truly appreciated it reel by reel.

As projectionists, we sometimes worry more about the projector and the physical running of the film (bulb off, film getting scratched, unspooled, out of focus, VS, etc.) than the film itself. In this case, they'll sit hours while worrying many things, when the film itself is boring... it's not worth at all... 😅

Totally agree with your assessment of 2001. Watch once bored to tears. Amazed Derann issued 2001 and 2010 as features. I suspect more as a vanity project There would be a certain type of super 8 collector who would buy them just to have them in their collection but more than likely sit on their shelves unwatched for years. They do turn up on eBay and dealers lists from time to time.
