  • 'Lost Horizon' Bluray.

Has anyone in the Forum got the Sony 80th anniversary Bluray of Lost Horizon, 1937? Thinking of awarding it to myself for fathers day!
Contemplating getting this after reading exciting reviews re. 4K resolution and scenes added. However. Looking at my year 2000 'Columbia Classics' dvd, it appears to have all the same extras with restorations notes etc.
My hope is that the section featuring the Conway character's meeting with the high Lama has been fully restored.
Is that too much to expect?

    Hi Allan

I don't have the Sony 80th, but this one. I am not sure if its any different regarding the transfer, here are the specs.

Its been a while now since I have watched it, however I didn't think the transfer looked that much better than my previous Columbia DVD. Usually blu-ray is a improvement over the DVD, this one however just did make it to the "wow" factor over the DVD.

Hopefully someone here has the Sony one you talk about, but if not, and if the price is right, give it a go. If you do let us know what you think of it.

Thanks, Graham, the literature suggests that an extra minute has been added.
My Columbia disc quotes 128 minutes in length and the 80th anniv says 133 minutes so it's anyone's guess. I'm pretty sure I saw the whole film in the fifties, but I could be mistaken.

As previously reported in these hallowed columns, I indeed awarded myself the 80th anniversary Bluray of 'Lost Horizon' for fathers day, which contained the DVD version as well.
It was good and disappointing in equal proportions, I suppose. Although the Bluray featured running time of 2.13.12 secs against the DVD of 2.07.48, I couldn't make out any additional material. Perhaps an aberration of the different formats? The dupe sections seemed the same and the frustrating stills, used to fill missing footage were still there.
However the best part was the now complete meeting between the Conway character and the High Lama. The stills have now been replaced, albeit with dupe sections.
Overall picture quality? Fine but not too far from the DVD which was excellent anyway.
All in all, a good buy.

With regards to the running times, the Blu Ray runs at 24 fps and the UK DVD at 25fps which is about 5% faster so the film will will seem shorter.
