  • E-bay advice needed

Hi all ,I've just purchased a film on e_bay from a seller in France (I'm in the UK) and the buyer has asked for I'd,when I asked what I'd they required they said they require a tax code for the import documentation, just wondered if anyone else had come across this before,I know things have changed since we left the European Union but this is a new one to me,I'm a private buyer not a business.

I would have no idea, being in the U.S., but that sounds a little suspicious, asking for I.D. as, all the shipping info should already be there. I'm sure someone in the U.K. could answer better.

Hi Russ, I know its getting very very complicated, and may be by each country now.

Usually you would just expect a customs slip with a declaration.

If its around 30/35 E gift should be OK.

But if you need to access codes etc it could be tough.

The whole thing is a dissaster from top to bottom sadly.

Did you look on the YOUGUV site.

      Good luck.

We are in for every rocky and expensive times in the UK unfortunately.

You could maybe call UK customs, they may know, but possibly may not.

      Hope it sorts out.

      Best wishes Mark.

I have had this problem too, and like you questioned the need for this, NI numbers should never be given to anyone who hasn't already got it. This in my case was TNT, ask the seller to change the shipping company, less invasive paperwork.............

Thanks for the advice ,my wife said that she sent a present to her mum in Spain the other day and had to fill in a customs slip but left the tax code section empty the post office didn't seem bothered about it and sent the parcel anyway,I have looked on the UK gov website but either I'm being a bit thick which is a strong possibility but if gave me lots of advice except what I needed to know.the e-bay advice pages just keep taking me to my home page,I'll have to see what happens it isn't a massive amount and the seller has plenty of good feedback but that's not really the point.ive bought lots from Europe in the past with no real hassle but I'm at the point where unless it's an item that I really want I don't think ill bother,I think they need to introduce a global shipping programme for European purchases like the one we use when purchasing from the USA which I quite like.

I've never heard of this. And, I would never give out personal information. Perhaps I don't understand the situation at hand. Sounds like a scammer, to me. Back off, report, and risk negative feedback is what I would do.

Its not a scam, its a result of a very badly done Brexit. And poorly or not set out processes etc to cover the changes if even known.

We did have a much better deal set up that was voted down with our last Priminister, as no one at the time thought it would be as bad as this going on we are stuck with now, so hoped for a better one. Little did they know !!!

Even tarriff free good`s with UK companies are loosing EU sales hand over fist as both sides now have masses of complicated paperwork.

I do wonder if each EU country is going to have a different approach to customs on private goods ?

Its not a shock that you can`t easily find out what the code is Russ !!!

We will need an EU global shipping set up with ebay for good`s coming in to the UK from other EU and also going out that way too, so all covered and no nasty surprises or £11 fees for taking the fee`s on top every time.

We maybe don`t yet have that GSP, as even ebay can`t work out what to do ?

              Best Mark.

I am wondering if the seller was wanting the UK Global Online Tariff Commodity Code?
Cinematographic film, exposed and developed, whether or not incorporating soundtrack or consisting only of soundtrack - UK Global Online Tariff - GOV.UK (trade-tariff.service.gov.uk)

Its a total disasster, UK exports to the EU are down 40% +, and once past re-ordering etc its going to be even worse.

And the costs for us private buyers from the EU are vast.

The Banks and financial services are relocating etc too. Its actually worse already than what was described as project fear !!! and its just getting going.

One of my sons wants to go and live and work in Holland, its now a 5 year going on !!! overall apparently as hes going through it all.

I wish to gawd I had ordered the bits I needed from Germany in December !!! but there was a deal !!! ahem.

                  Best Mark.

                    Hi Russ

I'm no expert on this and I'm happy to be corrected but this is my understanding when sending/receiving goods.
                    • For countries outside the EU we always had to provide a 'Tariff Code'
                    • After 1 Jan 2021 we now have to do the same for EU countries so it's not a 'new' thing as such but adopting the existing international process
I suspect the import Tariff Code you want is 3706905200

Commodity code 3706905200: Consisting only of soundtrack; negatives; intermediate positives; newsreels - UK Global Online Tariff - GOV.UK (trade-tariff.service.gov.uk)

If receiving a gift then a value of less than £39 has no VAT and less than £135 has no Customs Duty (assuming these are chargeable under the Tariff Code/Country combination). Full details on whether VAT and Customs Duty are chargeable above these limits will be shown against the Tariff Code you select.

Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad: Tax and duty - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad: Tax and duty - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

When I am the sending a parcel abroad I look up what the gift value limits are for the receiving country and declare within the maximum limit. Otherwise the chances are the recipient of my gift will be lumbered with a small VAT/Customs Duty charge but accompanied by a hefty admin fee from the courier company which kind of kills the magic of receiving a gift!

The only downside is the insurance cover for the parcel will be limited to the value one has declared, but that's a risk I am comfortable with as I have yet to send anything of really high value and if I did then I would just have to accept the additional VAT/Customs Duty payments as part of the cost of sending the parcel.

I hope that helps. but like I stated previously - I'm not expert and remain happy to be corrected if someone else is better informed
