  • Air Conditioning Unit Recommendation ?

    Help !

In the UK we are going through a very hot period at the moment. My film room is like an oven. I am trying everything to cool it down. What I really need is an air conditioner.

I understand there is a difference between an air COOLER and air CONDITIONER. I read the spec for a cooler but when it says it could not reduce the temperature from, for example, 30c to 23c, that went out the window, so it must be conditioner (which I could also use periodically throughout the year when needed to keep the room MUCH cooler)

Can anyone who uses one of these in their film room please advise a decent model with a rough cost of price, please?

    A PM would suffice.

    Thank you.

You definitely don't want a cooler. These are essentially fans that blow air over water to provide a breeze that feels cool. In an enclosed space they will raise the humidity which will harm your film. You will need a conditioner which will exhaust the heat out. Here is a link to an article on how to choose an air conditioner: https://homeairguides.com/how-to-cho...right-ac-unit/

Melvin, i dont if this is the answer for you but this is my problem and solution, my house is on three levels, my film room is in a room directly below our front living room. In other words, in the basement, below ground, the basement is like another normal floor as at the rear its back on ground level at the back, our back garden is via this area. it gets very humid in the winter during mild rainy times with the humidity levels going up to around 70-80, (it should be 50-55 ideally) in the summer, like now it will always stay near 75-80. What i bought was a dehumidifier for a five bedroom house so i know it's man enough to do the job. (a Meaco, brilliant unit). They cost between 150 -350 but are worth there weight in gold. I place it in the central area of the basement with the film room door left open and its now a constant 45-55 day and night. Each evening i empty around a gallon of water every 24 hours. I can tube it directly to a out pipe but i prefer to see how much it produces in a day.

While this may not cool your room down it will take out the moisture produced by the heat which is also harmful to films and equipment.
What you do notice when its cold humid is how much faster your heating warms the house up because the unit takes out the cold moisture.
Another thing there good for, in the freezing winter months, if your rooms suffer with streaming condensation, this units stops that, or at least, it does for us.

I imagine you feel cooler and drier in a lower humidity atmosphere too!

Defiantly Brian, another thing to consider, here in the UK most people have there roof space insulated. Great in the winter when its cold, but in the summer it keeps doing its job of not allowing heat to go up through. My Brother opens his loft hatch, (like mine, its a decent size hinged one, so easy to open and leave hanging down). I'd forgotten about this idea and yesterday morning i dropped it open, while the house was still hot in the afternoon and evening, it was noticeably cooler as the heat and humidity were able to escape up through the roof.
The dehumidifier works perfect for us, and the film room is always the coolest room in the house, and now the humidity is under control it feels so much more comfortable and i know the films and equipment are better protected.
