  • Beware of scam email using David Baker's name

I think David, as well as everybody on the forum needs to know about this. I received what looked like a very convincing email from David Baker this morning ... and this is what it states ...

    Dave Baker <rwilson19444@gmail.com>

Hi Osi, I want to let you know that you don't need to send the payment through paypal. I want you to use the $350 to get a google play gift card (domination of $50 in 7cards) in any nearest stores close to you. Once you are with the gift i need you to remove the card out of the packet and scratch the back of the card to reveal the code number, take a photo of the back showing the code number and have them email to me for confirmation. I forward to hear from you soon.

    Thanks so much my friend,
    Dave.

I HIGHLY doubt that David Baker, a trusted friend on this forum, would ever suggest to anyone to pay by 50 dollar gift cards. In fact, there are a myriad of nigerian and other country scams who do just this. I'm sure that David can verify this as well.

It might just be because I have had my email account hacked that I received this, but just in case anyone else gets this email, IGNORE IT!

NO OSI , THAT " convincing " email IS NOT FROM ME !
Everyone on the forum knows how to contact me and the email I use .
I DO NOT accept ANY payments EXCEPT through PAYPAL or a hard copy sent to my PO BOX !

Evidently this is a " guest " on this site who can view all the threads .
Since this has happened again with Osi , I think Doug and Brad should change this Forum to a private one , members only , to help protect all of us from this type of scam .

    AGREE FOLKS ?

Sorry to hear that Dave but I would rather see the forum in general remain public. Is it possible the buying and selling films including new ones topic, "itself" can be locked to private? while the rest of the forum stays open.

The forum should remain open to the public. If you do an internet search on a technical film question, you will often find posts on the topic at the 8mm Forum. That is how I found the old 8mm forum years ago.

Men at some time are masters of their fates:
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.
Come on, admit it; How often have you posted something that really should have been a Private Message (PM)?

I wonder how the scammer got Osi's e-mail.

About the forum, I prefer seeing it public, as well.

Besides, without it being open, I couldn't send a warning about scammers to protect everyone. On that other question, my theory is that, about three weeks ago, there was a major cyber attack that came from China, that was a direct assault on Microsoft, thru whom I have my email. While I am starting a new email account, I have wanted to keep the old one open as evidence for Microsoft and others to recover the phishing emails, but this might be a bad stragedy.

I would vote to leave this forum open to public.

On the other side it is best for moderator to modify Osi's subject post to something like "Beware of phising email" or sort of, rather than the current title that sounds negative about one member's activity.

                My 2 cents though.

                  Agreed
Keep the Forum as it is.
After all, whilst anybody can read the Forum, only members can contribute.

I already wrote Dave, and he understands my motivation behind the title of the post.

                      I appreciate Osi's comment.
But I do think that the title of the posting could, perhaps, be changed from reference to a particular person.

I think the Forum should stay public, as it has been for the past 20 years.

I have modified the topic title.

This scam is something we all need to be mindful of. If there is any doubt about the veracity of an email from a Forum member, please use the PM function to check in with that member.
