  • My pre-cine film days

When I was a kid in the 1960s, I could only dream of owning a projector and films. But in 1964, as a 7 year old, I purchased the nearest thing to having a cine film - a photonovel.

It was a photonovel of a 1950s film called 'The Mole People' and was published by the same people who did 'Famous Monsters of Filmland'. I bought it when I was on holiday at the seaside town of Bridlington in East Yorkshire (my second home, as we had a static caravan there). These kind of magazines only seemed to be available at seaside towns as far as I could tell.

I loved this photonovel, even though I had never heard of 'The Mole People' film. I kept a lookout for any other photonovels of sci-fi / monster films but never saw any.

The ads in the back of the mag were similar to 'Famous Monsters', with mouth watering monster movie cut downs for me to drool over.

Did anyone else have this photonovel back in the day? Was this the only one published?

That is such a freaking awesome story! I always thought that fotonovels were an invention of the 70's, but apparently, they were around a good deal earlier.

The photonovels as we know them were invented in Italy in 1947. They arrived in France in 1949. I don't know when it started in the US but probably in the '50s.

By the way, I definitely recognize that little mini projector, designed for only 50ft reels! I always wanted one as a kid, but I ended up "converting" a movie editors I got free from a friend, into a movie projector!
