Pity there isn't one more central to all collectors from across the uk, instead of just those up north, maybe more people would be able to attend these events............

Me neither Graham, they were strange silver 'discs' - I haven't seen them before.

I thought for a minute they were VHS tapes, so they were some type of silver disc, mmmmm I wonder what that was but is that "not" the "REEL" thing ha ha.

I have seen silver discs like that tied to fruit trees to discourage birds. 😂

Anyway here's a few pictures I took there.

              Hi Paul.
I used to live in the south east UK and never missed travelling up to Blackpool for the Derann event. Then I moved 'up north' then started travelling down to Tadley, Ealing and Chiswick for the 9-5 do loving every minute.

My greatest achievement in the 80's was getting my boss to let me work overnight in the darkroom running the machine processor (my workplace) so I could make the 6am train out of London to Blackpool each year. A box full of memories and I loved every minute!

Wonderful story Lee, that last part, but you must have been tired. Great to get that early train though.

I don't think i will be upping sticks and moving up north any time soon, it must be your dedication to the hobby or blind faith, either way you get first dibs on the films before it opens to the punters .......

Me neither Paul, one of the reasons we stopped after two Ealings was because certain people got in first to take a pue and get the best stuff, which i thought was not right. Others also commented at the time.
It is great meeting people in the hobby though, and we did enjoy the conventions very much but we didn't see too many bargains. Prices were that of the listings sent out by dealers. It is a shame that all the conventions are up North but moving up for a hobby is what i call overkill. Down here in the South West is where i am happy, up North these days is like being in another Country, last time i visited London's Ealing convention we had a great time, once i stepped outside i felt like a spot on as domino.

Tom not all the conventions are up North. The next one the Group 9.5 get together is next month in Rickmansworth just outside London. I also have been told Big Screen Time is likely to return next year also in Rickmansworth . There is no Ealing at present but it has been mentioned in bringing it back if this comes true.

As for people pushing in to get the best films this has always happened but in the past there have been so many films at these conventions (like Ealing) that if you do miss out on a wanted title you will often pick up another great title and more as there is plenty to go round. I've never been disappointed in my trips to Ealing, Blackpool and more. Yes I have missed out on some great films (like Gremlins) but you can't buy every film there and you may find it at another convention. The trick I found is to get there early to get a chance to grab the best stuff and if you don't it wasn't your day. Even though if you turn up 2 hours late you can still find good stuff sometimes. The cine fairs today are smaller with less top prints available but are still great places to go just to meet other collectors over a cuppa and get that cine buzz with like minded people.

True Graham. Since my event we have been chatting to the northern 9-5ers who will also be making the journey to Rickmansworth next month and it will be a good attendance pleased to say. With events I just go and enjoy the day meeting people and treating the collection to some films to keep the rest company.
Bob on with meeting other like minded folk as well Graham. Yes its all about the film but don't forget the camaraderie which is perhaps the life's blood of our interest more than ever after Covid.

As for missing out on early sales. I didn't get round the dealers tables until at least lunch time then found a Derann colour feature I had been looking for 10 years or so since my own went red.

Looking forward to seeing other 9-5ers next month very much in the south, enjoying some southern tea also. The committee are to be thanked for once again making the magic happen.
Long live 9.5mm the first amateur film gauge.

Before we all drift off topic and re staging these events. I am now looking at hireling a screen at the local multiplex over Christmas for a celebration afternoon of all the sub standard film gauges. It will be ticketed for a cancer charity. Will start a new thread if I can get a date for this year...
                        8mm-9.5mm-16mm and 17.5mm.

If anyone else has any ideas for a good FILM event or location please email me as I would love to hear from you. Lets see if we can make 2022 a REELY big year for a hobby we all love especially with the anniversary of 9.5mm film.

Cant see anything off topic myself, but it's not about about missing out on early bargains, it was the principle of it.
For me being there, it would be more about meeting other collectors, at present time i work for a living so dont have the time unfortunately, but that may change, hopefully, in 2022 i may make the Blackpool event if there is one. I think everyone gets the reely thing now, how about it kids?

It looks like a good day was had by those who attended.
There seems to be a fair amount of dealer tables were there, which implies a fair number of active dealers. I'm curious, do these dealers trade online at all or purely at fairs/meetings?

This reminds me of my first reel (oops, sorry) film convention, which was the 47th BFCC, 17 years ago! I had never seen anything like it. I can't recall which prints I purchased, however I'll never forget meeting, talking and dining with fellow film collectors, many who I knew through this Forum. Putting these shows together involves a great deal of work and it's wonderful to see that they're well attended.
