  • Of film thickness and scratching ...

A thought concerning mag striped film compared to optical sound or silent films. In theory, would not striped films have more of a chance of showing wear and tear, than optical sound or silent films? On a related issue, by having a mag stripe would that, ever so slightly allow for less surface wear, as the mag stripe adds thickness to the film and would, in theory, lift the film surface from elements that would scratch in the film path?

Swings and roundabout, I would think. The strip may protect the side of the film that it is on but put the other at risk as it would give more pressure on it against any surface it passed.

Osi - To push forward your second question / theory one step further, are you suggesting that films with main and balance stripe would therefore, theoretically, not be subject to any scratching in a regularly cleaned / maintained projector ?

I wouldn't say it's impossible, obviously, as all of us have scratched films. With proper maintenance, with a good brand, ELMO or EUMIG, for instance, film prints will last an incredibly like ng time, but that mag stripe no doubt makes a difference.
