I really liked "What's up Doc" and have the Red Fox Super 8 promo "Screwball comedies, remember them?"

    RIP Peter.

I was lucky enough to meet him on a few shoots for the American Film Institute. Whenever they were doing one of their "AFI's 100 years......" TV specials, they would have him go on camera not only to talk about his films, but also films from the Silent Era and early talkies. He had an encyclopedic knowledge about all things cinema.

Two of my favorites of his are The Great Buster, a wonderful Buster Keaton documentary, and The Cat's Meow, a drama about the mysterious death of Thomas Ince while aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht.

I think a great deal of Peter's success came from his wife, Polly Platt, who was Production Designer on his early successful films. When Peter met Cybill Shepard and had a affair during the production of The Last Picture Show, his marriage to Poly Platt and his successes in films took a dive.

Ben Mankiewicz did a season of podcasts interviewing Peter Bogdanovich. The first podcast "Bugs" is available on YouTube.

Introducing the first podcast from Turner Classic Movies: The Plot Thickens. Episode one features a young film buff named Peter Bogdanovich grows up in New York, learning to obsess over the movies the way his father obsesses over art. With his sights set on acting, Peter lies his way into the most prestigious acting class in the world. That’s where he unexpectedly finds his calling as a director – by sparring with one of the biggest TV stars of all time.
Here is the "Bugs" episode from YouTube:

The is also another podcast, "You Must Remember This" that has episodes on Polly Platt and Peter Bogdanovich.

...if you know Polly Platt’s name today, it’s probably because, in 1970, her husband and creative collaborator Peter Bogdanovich had an affair with Cybill Shepherd while shooting the film that made both Bogdanovich and Shepherd major stars of their era, The Last Picture Show. But Platt was much more than a jilted wife: she was the secret, often invisible-to-the-public weapon behind some of the most loved American “auteur” films (many of them comedies, directed by men) of the last decades of the 20th century.

I still say that "What's Up Doc" is one of the funniest comedies of all time! His hey day was the 70's, but, as stated earlier, he was a wonderful source of great information! He did a great number of excellent interviews with Orson Welles.

A wonderful filmmaker, but, in addition, his contribution to scholarship is immeasurable.
