However the 1918 wasn't actually of Spanish origin, they were just the first to admit to having it, others kept quiet for morale reasons towards the end of the war.

The flu epidemic was kept out of the papers by war censors. Spain being neutral was free to report on it and by association the name Spanish flu stuck with them. Considering it killed anywhere between 50 to 100 million people mostly all young and fit it puts Covid at 5 million (very high over count) figure into prospective.
