  • eBay bidding fiasco ...

I ran into a strange curiosity today on eBay. There was a feature offered, ending today, "All in a Nights Work". Viacom release. I waited until the last two minutes. It was at 51.00 dollars. Because my Cellphone can be a little slow, I put in a bid of 74.00 dollars. I clicked the bid button. It went back to the auction, but didn't show my bid. I had a little over a minute left, so I went to place bid again, and it didn't show that my previous bid of 74.00 dollars was entered. I therefore put in my bid, this time at 76.00. I clicked place bid ... and it went back again to the auction page, and yet again, my bid didn't show up. The auction ended, at 59.00 dollars. I was totally confused. I wrote the seller, asking if, perhaps, the seller had blocked me. He said that I hadn't been blocked, as I had never screwed the seller, and he was rather pissed, in that he lost out on a potential 76.00 dollars on the film. Being that I wasn't blocked, and I was putting in my bid well before the auction was done, (as the countdown was still going down, it wasn't frozen), I am totally perplexed as to what had happened. A question, could someone have hacked into the sellers account or my account, and somehow put on some program to block my bids? I did receive an email from ebay, from yesterday, saying that there was a curious log in on my account. Could that be it?

No, you don't understand. This wasn't a case of sniping. I put up two bids within the last two minutes of the auction, first one, 74 dollars, and the second, just to be different, 76.00 dollars. The auction ended at 59.00 dollars. That is what is so mysterious, and yes, I know how to place a bid.

Sounds like it's your phone's fault. Unless it was a really smart hacker.

It appears that my bids were literally, somehow, cancelled. Would it be possible to actually do that? If so, when I send an email to them on Monday, I'll ask as to where did the suspicious log in come from? As ... I only check into eBay from two sources, and if that suspicious log in to my account, was going on a different location ... we've got him!

Osi, have you ever thought, 'maybe ebay just isn't for me'? Perhaps Doug should set up a new section on the forum titled 'Osi's ebay woes'? 😄

Seriously though Osi, the best way to bid on ebay is to put in the maximum you are prepared to pay early on and just leave it to run under ebay's auto bidding system. You can't beat the snipers using your current method, so why even try.

Sure, you won't always win an auction this way but you know you won't pay over the odds or get the kind of messed up result like your last attempt.

Either way, good luck with future efforts.

But Ossie said the snipers didn't beat him as it went for LESS than his last bid. I also can't understand this.

                Not everything is a conspiracy
If you leave it to the last minute/seconds to manually snipe then there is a fair chance it can go wrong either through a technical glitch or fat fingers.
I would suggest using a auto-sniper (which has never failed for me) or bidding manually early on.

                  Great post Gary.

It could still be a phone problem Osi. I too like you found my phone to be a bit slow and lost out on a previous film because I thought I bid with 30 seconds to go but in reality the auction had ended so it didn't register. Also had the problem with my old phone not responding so now in future if I bid on mobile (cellphone) I do it with enough time to spare that I can use the PC if something goes wrong. Most of the time now I prefer to bid on the computer and make sure the bid comes up.

I'll send that letter Monday, but you may well be right, Graham, even with two minutes before the auction ends. I always hate having to bid on an item at home on my cell phone, and films rarely end when I am at the library internet. Hey! That may well be a great idea! A whole catalog of my gripes entitled, "Osi Hates eBay"!!
