Whoever Chris Rock is he could have asked Mr Smith during planning the show if it was OK to poke fun at his wife, thats if they bother to plan tv these days.
The way women are put down today is shameful and a presenter doing just that in front of a global audience beggers belief.
Totally disgusting behavior by both parties. Some so called comedians don't have a clue about humor and respect for their audience, stooping to the obscene and insulting in an attempt to get a laugh. Chris Rock is not funny. As for the other guy his Oscar needs to be yanked away from him and he needs to be banned from all future Academy Award ceremonies.
This just gets more interesting. On "Inside Edition" last night, (it is on at 9 pm), it turns out that not just Chris Rock, but two other comedians bad mouthed the Smith's, that very night, before Chris Rock. They were bad mouthed while on the red carpet, and they were supposed to just laugh it off. Another lady comedian bad mouthed Will Smith in another comedy bit, while on the show, before Chris Rock, and the Smith's are supposed to just laugh it off. Unfortunately for the moronic Rock, he was the victim of the three strikes and you're out rule. Just how.much abuse does one family have to take, in one night, before it's too much abuse?
Chris Rock’s act has always been abuse. I see a video clip of Will Smith has surfaced from 1999 when he was a comedian making repeated fun of some man’s baldness. The internet never forgets.
Both Mr and Mrs Smith have a very long close association with Rock going back 30 years. In fact Chris knew Jada before she knew Will. I see ticket sales for Chris Rock Comedy tour have gone through the roof so somebody will be happy.
Whatever was said the way Will Smith handled it was totally wrong. If you did that in any workplace setting you would be sacked and in US likely get one of those bright prison outfits to wear.
Anyway the moral authority of Jim Carrey 🤣🤣🤣has come out condemning Will. This is guy who gave all his girlfriends multiple STIs and drove one to suicide because of his behaviour.
Wonder will next years Oscar’s be hosted by Jerry Springer and have Alec Baldwin as the resident clown/ comedian. They will all need to be frisked for handguns at this rate.
I am surprised to hear so many forum members thinking that Will Smith’s behaviour was justified. Violence is never justified in a civilised society. Modern comedians, simply aren’t funny they now spend their time making slanderous and disparaging remarks to audience members and sections of society and people roar with laughter. It illustrates how far society has slid backwards in the last thirty years. Will smith should be removed from the academy list and lose his Oscar. If the Academy were to tolerate this behaviour it would be deplorable and would make assault an acceptable action - it is not.
It is clear from the video of the night that Will Smith is laughing at Chris Rock, even at the point of talking about a G.I Joe sequel, then you see his wife’s face change, she is offended and Will then assaults Chris Rock.
Do you remember the Oscars being hosted by Bob Hope? No smut just gentle humour and real film stars, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, William Holden, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Paul Scofield, Charles Laughton, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Deborah Kerr, Audrey Hepburn, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Laurel and Hardy, W.C. Fields etc etc.
I’m afraid Hollywood today is dreadful, there are no real stars, Dwayne Johnson who is affable enough is the highest paid male star? Film franchises abound, no original ideas out there. Cinemas are soulless prefab boxes, operated by people who don’t care about showmanship. Look at the upcoming film schedule for 2023 it’s populated with Superheroes, horror films, carbon copy computer animated films, with just the odd good film being made, many of which are not mainstream so they only have a limited release.
This is in part why a lot of people on this forum collect film, dvd and Blu ray because that’s where real stars are.
It was said on another forum that Will should have taken a glove and lightly slapped Chris and asked for a duel outside to restore his wife's honour. ("Sir, you have insulted my wife and I demand satisfaction" type of thin) I think that may have both defused the situation and stung Chris' reputation more.
Very bold of Mr Smith to stand up for his wife on global TV but it shows love and care for his partner.
Absolute devotion is a rare commodity today to defend a loved one.
Standing in the limelight the other guy who I've never heard of had centre stage and used it to his advantage this time he got caught out. No one can stand proud poking fun at anyone with a health problem.
Or in this inclusive Universe that they occupy gave him a big sloppy kiss. Least they will remember this Oscar year. George C Scott had the right attitude.
"a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons," and sent a telegram to the Academy telling them that he'd be refusing the award, and didn't even want his name on the ballot.”
“You can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly and still have room enough for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart.”
Ed, what a great quote! Phil, good post as well, even if I don't agree with all of it. Yes, Oscars heyday was many moons ago. I think that they ought to get Billy Crystal back to host. He did a pretty good job.
I think Jim Carry comments were spot on, however I have contacted the Oscars and asked them if they would like me to organize the next one. With my skills it could really be improved upon.
Just as an example.. 1..."dress code" this needs to change, anyone over dressed with tons of make up on won't be allowed in.
2...I will be on the door to check this, and anyone looking a bit iffy won't be allowed in. Anyone objecting to those above two items, will be banned for life.
3...Entertainment on the stage has to be stopped, also no more boring acceptance speeches.
4....Also no more standing ovations, this has to stop, due to the effect on the mental health of the losers.
5....After Oscars, everyone would be invited to a nearby mall, where they will each be given a "Muffin Break" coffee voucher, music will be allowed, "however" it has to go through me, and be from 1960s.
6...Being a generous person as I am, each person will receive a cane basket included in it, will be a cheap bottle of wine, 2 packets of crisps, and a small box of scorched almonds.
7...Now the Oscars themselves I will pick out the winners, anyone objecting to "my choice" will also be banned for life.
The "Grahammies"! Has familiar ring to it, and I can already see it as an improvement already! "This year's nomination for best performance by an actor phoning in his performance are ... "
