Cinema's in The Azores, Iceland, and inbetween !

Over the last couple of weeks or so, I have been lucky enough to have been on a nice relaxing cruise that took me from Liverpool down to the Azores and then up to Iceland and the Arctic Circle. Yes, I had a great time, thanks!

I did think of you all !

I have taken some photos that may be of interest at both destinations.

The first set of photographs show the cinema and films currently showing at a place called Angra Do Heroismo on the island of Terceira in the Azores.

Approximately 1900 miles north of this, at a town on the north western tip of Iceland only a stones throw from the Arctic Circle called Isafjordur, comes this rather majestic cinema, considering the population of the town was only 2000 !!!

(Not sure what the first two films were, but the above one is self explanatory)!



The one "Inbetween" is the cinema on board the ship Borealis as it was being prepared to screen the film "Belfast." I personally thought the screen was too small for the size / width of the auditorium. Such is life !

It is a bit ironic to think that the day the first photo was taken was the same day that Cinesea 24 was taking place in Wildwood, and in the Azores, I was closer to Wildwood then I ever would have been in the British Isles.

Great pictures, Melvin. Since you were in the Azores, I assume you must have done quite a bit of whale watching.

Very interesting - I see what you mean about the ship cinema, but the difficulty is the low ceiling, as a bigger screen would take the bottom of the screen close to head height, which is dreadful if tall people are in front of you!

Doug - Yes, you are right. The problem was, that most times I went on deck to the forward viewing deck to get a panoramic view of the sea, they did a disappearing act. We had several professional marine people on board from the ORCA organization giving lectures throughout the voyage. At the end, they reported 647 sightings. I managed to see a grand total of....... 4 ! A sperm whale, a hump back, an Orca and one other in an Icelandic fjord..... plus a few porpoises darting around the ship. It is quite a sight to see those large tail fins come out of the water as the whale dives.

Adrian - Yes, I agree. I am not sure that it was designed as a purpose built cinema, more like a general auditorium with a screen. It did have a projection box at the back.

Graham - I couldn't tell you as I didn't stay for the presentation, but I see what you mean !

Yes the screen does look more like one originally fitted more for data presentations (training and lectures)than film to me.
