I’ve been a big fan of the 1960’s Dr Who movies since my parents took me and my sister to see the first one at a cinema re-release back in the 70’s. I’m sure it was one of my first cinema experiences as I was only about 5 or 6.
Then I was lucky enough to own the Walton 4 x 400 footer when I was about 11.
So I was delighted to see that both movies were getting new theatrical outing thanks to Studio Canal. This was to showcase the new 4K masters made from the camera negatives.
Saw them at a state of the art Odeon and they look and sound stunning. Just perfect.
The grain from the techniscope negatives is captured beautifully and although they’ve both had substantial digital clean up work done, they look totally filmic. In fact as a die hard film nut, I have to say that they couldn’t look any better, even as a print.
Digital cinema has come a long way in 20 years.
It was beautiful to see them like this in a cinema again all these many years later.
