  • BFCC April 2023

Mark Williams and I are currently looking to resurrect the British Film Collectors Convention in a suitable location within the London Underground network (but outside the Congestion Tax zone) and preferably not too far from it's more recent Ealing base. We are going to need help to do this and it really is going to be a "use it or lose it" project. The hope is that we can ensure it is a not for profit event and set up to thrive for years into the future. To make this a reality we are going to need the help of others so please read on below.

We estimate that a successful BFCC can be put on in the fabulous Chorleywood Memorial Hall for around £750 (cost of the hall, insurance etc.) and if we can therefore get 100 people through the door at £5 per head plus at least 10 dealers tables at £25 each we will cover those costs entirely. We are looking to assemble a group of at least ten film enthusiasts to make this happen. Ten of us putting in just £50 would make the financing easy and then at the end of convention day it is expected that everyone would be refunded in full; but if there were any losses they would surely be small. So if you're like us and really would like to see an ambitious BFCC return then please let Mark or I know so that we can quickly get an impression of whether or not this venture is viable.

Keith Wilton is not currently in the best of health but we hope that he will be recovered enough to join us as master of ceremonies next April, but without the stress of being the sole organizer of years gone by. We expect to get the 24 foot wide 'Scope screen there but if this does not prove possible initially then the hall has a motorized, drop down screen that I estimated to be 16 feet wide swhichthis will be a good compromise if necessary.

To see the Chorleywood Memorial Hall have a look at this video but bear in mind that it did seem quite a bit more spacious inside than it appears within the video:

    John & Mark,

I've thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the BFCC in the past and I wish you both the greatest success in keeping the tradition going. I hope Keith gets better very quickly.

The Chorleywood Memorial Hall looks like a great location.

Brilliant suggestion J and C , the venue looks ideal and well sited . I am more than happy to help with the afore mentioned amount to get the ball rolling. I am sure more members will follow , we have to all pull together on this one and keep the BFCC going , it’s been sadly missed. Sorry to hear Keith is not too well , he has been an absolute hero along with the many helpers organising these events over the years , get well soon Keith!

Chorley Wood Station is on the London Underground Metropolitan Line. Accessible from many central London stations.

Hi Chorley Wood is used by Group 9.5 Get together. Just a reminder, it is booked for 22 October. At the moment, I do not know if I will be able to make it. I am not so mobile as l used to be! Hope Keith gets better quickly. The film collecting fraternity owe a great deal to him and his little band of helpers. Ken Finch

If you are able to make this a go, make sure that you have some local TV or BBC there to mark the event. It would certainly be noteworthy.

That is good news. I have only been able to attend one BFCC in the past due to costs, it was in 1989 Keith Prowse was there and Keith Wilton screened his documentary ‘Errol Flynn The Reluctant Swashbuckler’ which was very good. Over the years I have asked Keith a few times for advice relating to projector problems and he has always been very courteous and helpful. Best wishes to Keith for a speedy recovery.

So sorry to hear Keith is not well, I sincerely wish him all the best for a full recovery. Of course the whole film collecting community owes Keith a huge debt. The 3 BFCC's at the Ealing town hall that I attended were just amazing, and I enjoyed them all immensely, so hopefully Chorleywood will be able to carry on flying the flag, and hopefully Keith will be able to be there.

Would a table holder have access to a power point, or, perhaps, a seller might have to bring a long extension lead?

Even I can get their, as my local train terminates at Liverpool Street then onto the Metropolitan line to Chorley Wood Underground Station, I'll be their somehow, I don't drive much now as I've got a bad knee, but sitting on a train, that's doable!
