As we get ever closer to fall and Halloween, I thought it would be fun to hear what movies you all plan to screen through the months leading up to the big day!
I always make a list of Films/Books/Comics to enjoy from Sept. thru Oct. to help ramp up that cozy fall feeling.
Lincoln's 2022 Halloween Hootenanny
Lady In White (1988) Fall just radiates from the film. The mysteries of coming of age during the holidays.
Phantasm (1979) Fall/Autumn vibes mixed with the dark and surreal. One of my all time favorite films.
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) Cozy and hilarious!
WNUF Halloween Special/Out There MegaTape (2013/2022) A loving experiment recreating Halloween commercials and era appropriate ephemera you'd find on small town local TV stations in the 80's and 90's
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) Bradbury understood the magic and melancholy of fall.
The Fog (1980) The first cold breeze of fall at the end of summer. Still spooky and atmospheric.
Creepshow (1982) Romero and King. A match made in Heav- well, maybe not there. Perfect recreation of EC comics come to life!
Halloween 3 (1982) Fun, dark, and full of enough autumn atmosphere to stuff a whole orchard of pumpkins.
The Innocents (1961) Beautiful and haunting!
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)Perhaps my favorite things Disney ever made?
Kenny & Co. (1976) Coscarelli creates a wonderful feeling of boyhood and friendship against the backdrop of the California fall.
Dead & Buried (1981) Very Creepy!
Carnival of Souls (1962) Watch after dark while the wind blows across your shutters
The Monster Squad (1987) Perfect and fun. A family affair to get the kids interested in horrah.
The Exorcist III (1990) George C. Scott and Brad Douriff just going crazy. My favorite of the Exorcist films. Blasphemy I know!
E.T (1982) Come on, it's Spielberg. It's a stone cold classic for a reason.
The Changeling (1980) Probably my favorite haunted house film of all time.
Deep Red (1975) Very beautiful and entertaining Italian cinema.
House of Usher (1960) Corman and Price? Gothic Mansions? Yes please.
TV Shows/Made For Tv Movies (No Particular Order):
Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966) A classic for a reason! Believe in the great pumpkin!
Over The Garden Wall (2014) Nothing else quite like it. Beautiful and brimming with autumn atmosphere and intrigue. Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985) As is tradition, Halloween doesn't really count until I've watched the Great Pumpkin and Garfield's Halloween Special.
The Midnight Hour (1985) Made for TV film full of halloween charm and a fun soundtrack!
Salem's Lot (1979) One of my favorite King adaptations ever made. Still scares me.
Ghostwatch (1992) Legit spooky and best to watch without prior knowledge.
The Halloween Tree (1990) Because I'm a sap, I've watched this cartoon movie every fall since I was a child.
MONSTERS (1988) Is it good? Debatable, but I love it and the wild monsters they created.
Tales From The Darkside (1983) The Halloween episodes.
Books:
The Halloween Tree (Ray Bradbury) I'm a glutton for sappy stories about friendship and monsters on Halloween.
The October Country (Bradbury) Well documented by now that I like Bradbury.
Come Along With Me (Shirley Jackson) Write prose like nobodies business and can spook the pants off ya.
Summer of Night (Dan Simmons) Do you like monsters and fall and kids on an adventure with real stakes? It's for you. Garfield/TinTin/Calvin & Hobbes Comics (Misc.) If nothing else, I'm predictable. I love reading these old comics.
