I don't know what his personal suffering was, but I always feel sad when a person feels that they no option but to kill themselves.

Following the medical report, he was suffering from "multiples pathologies invalidantes" (several debilitating conditions or pathologies that lead to invalidity, I'm not sure what the best translation is but you get the idea).

I ran a Film Society for ten years in the 60s and 70s and his films were always fresh and interesting. Godard was one of the "New Wave" who somewhat altered the making of films.

We showed his 1960 "A bout de souffle" (Breathless) as soon as it was released on 16mm. It went very well and even received a round of applause at its end, something quite rare with our audience.

I remember a quote in a film magazine when he was asked if a film should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. He replied. "Oh yes, but not necessarily in that order".

          Maurice .

What a coincidence that you should mention Breathless . It was one of the the very first films we screened in the then brand new 3 screen Belmont (Art House) Cinema i was Chief Projectionist of when we opened in Aberdeen Scotland in 2001 .
