Just an interesting curiosity. I was checking out an ebayers auctions. There are three that I am interested in. All had just been listed. Two out of three I decided to put on my watch list. Before I put them on my watch list, they didn't have a bid. On both, just five minutes after I decided to watch them, they now both had a bid on them. I decided to do a little test. The third auction, I looked at, but I decided to not watch. I left the auction, came back a minute later .... It now has a bid on it. Question ... Could there be some kind a auction "engine" that, in order to generate business, will put in a"bid' on the auction, that's only reason for existence, is to make watchers or otherwise, bid on an item?

Anything is possible but not everything is a conspiracy
Whilst the quality of the listing, attractiveness of the item and overall pricing helps gain watchers and bids, I believe the 'engine' you are thinking of is Old Father Time - The longer an auction runs, the more likely it is to gain watchers and bids
