  • A Little Public Service Announcement

So a couple of months ago I got this terrifying phone call. My son (out in Indiana at college) "had been texting while driving, got in a serious accident, and wounded a pregnant woman." Now he was "headed to jail."

This was very well staged: there were "siren sounds" and I talked to a "cop", and there was also a terrified young voice on the other end, which powered by my own adrenaline sounded EXACTLY like my son!

-at this moment, my wife called his cell, there was no answer. The "cop" told me his cell had been "confiscated" as "evidence".

I then talked to his "attorney" and was told I needed to raise "bail" or my son would spend the night in the slammer. I said I wanted to talk to my son first. (-something was starting to feel...wrong!)

-just then my son called back. My wife picked up:

Son: "What's going on?? Why did you leave that message?!"
    Wife: "ARE YOU IN JAIL??!!!"
    Son: "Whhhhat?!!!"

He hadn't picked up because he was in class! (NO! -not "class"!)

After that, my (-other?) son called. (I only really HAVE one!)

    "DAAAD!! I'm in JAIL!!!"

-now I was a little wiser: I decided to have some fun with it:

    "What's your middle name?"

-and on the other end "click!"

    (-end chapter one!)

    Chapter 2!

So, I'm working from home today. Maybe two hours ago the phone rings and this terrified young voice is on the other end: "Daaaaad!!! I've been in a CAR ACCIDENT!!!"

-now, my kid is upstairs in the shower (I can hear the water running!), and his car is out in the driveway.
-but I try to be a reasonable guy: I'll play my own part.

"OH NOOOO!!!!....Which car were you driving?"

-and once again, on the other end I hear: "click!!"

I've done a little research here: this is a very common scam. A friend who is a police officer got this call and in the end the scammers went to jail (-oops!). It doesn't matter so much that you don't have young drivers in your household. Very often it's a grandchild or niece or nephew, it could even be a spouse or a parent. This is why I'm here: the more people know, the less worthwhile pursuing this particular scam will become.

If you ever find yourself in this particular phone call, the thing to do is keep an open mind: sometimes it really will be a loved one in trouble and you shouldn't slam the phone down right away (-would make for a really frosty Christmas dinner next December!).

    You need to ask questions:

    1) Where are you?
    2) What were you driving?
    3) Where were you going?
    4) Who are you with?
    5) Is Beth with you? (Works best if you know nobody by that name!)

(Keep "What's your middle name" in reserve!)

If they have a cellphone, CALL it!

-those kinds of things: at the very least force the scammers to do a lot of homework, but in the end try either to pierce their defenses or verify it's who they are claiming to be. (Don't be forced to step inside somebody else's world of fiction!)

Just at the minimum, be informed here!

The number of scams are permanently increasing. And they are getting better every day.
In March, my wife received a WhatsApp with (translated to English): „Mommy, my cellphone is broken. Hence, I have got a new cellphone and a new number. Love, <name of our oldest daughter>“ This was very easy to detect as we were in the car with all kids sitting on the back row.
Two weeks ago, my wife‘s mother received an eMail from “her bank“ (with her correct, complete name and address, the bank account number, …). The only suspicious thing was the „subject“ of the email (in Dutch instead of German). And of course, all links in the email pointed to „<bankname>.de.ru“ instead of „<bankname>.de“…

Yes, even after knowing the truth, we didn't sleep very easily that night.

-then again, this second time was kind of...fun!

(Maybe I'll start writing a script!)

-yet, as I said: you need to be a little careful. Years ago when I was still living with my parents: Some Guy called the house and had me on the phone, seemed to be of a demanding mindset.

          I said "Who IS this?"
          He said "Your father."
I said "Yeah, right!" -and slammed the phone down.

Later on I said to Dad "Some guy called claiming to be you!"
-and he said "That was me."

So, I guess we shouldn't leap to conclusions!

(-and even when it's your kid on the other end: identify yourself!)

There are so many scams about, one has to be so careful. Many have been highlighted on tv here recently and they are not just phone calls. Quite a lot can be by emails purportedly from eBay or Amazon, postal and courier devices etc. Some people have even had calls from the “police” requesting your help to catch someone who is trying to draw money from your bank account. Scary, particularly for elderly vulnerable members os society. Ken Finch.😳

Quite true. If you get emails with invoices for items that you know darned well, you have never ordered, be VERY careful. In the case of these, they supply a contact number. Now, a persons obvious first response is to wonder, "has someone accessed my personal info or credit cards?", and so I called the phone number, they "verified" that the order was in but they needed to check my "account info" which didn't exist in the first place, and when I turned my head and said to my wife, "yup! Scammers", the person said on the phone, " F**k you" and hung up. My my, such terrible phone etiquette.

                    There's a new wrinkle here:

We got together with some friends over the weekend and told this tale (…including the new chapter). One who is a Software Engineer said that increasingly scammers are using AI to manipulate recorded samples of voices to produce fake ones that will say whatever they want.

-so maybe the reason that young guy that just "had a car accident" sounded so much like my son is because it was (kind of) his voice!

(Our grip on reality is getting looser by the day!)

Had one yesterday - long pause after answering for him to reply. We talked over each other for a while (must have been a long distance call with delay) He told me his name I said "Why are you telling me your name?" and that I didn't know anyone of that name - he hung up!!

So many stories regarding scam and cold sales calls.
Many times I have told the caller "He's on the toilet....he won't be long....etc"
                        or
.... hang on I've got diarrhoea back in a few minutes...

I can't speak right now as the Police are just arresting him. Call back in 5 years if he gets let out for good behaviour.

Telling the caller to hang on while we do a line trace. CLICK!

Informing the double glazing salesman I was a competitor's Regional Sales Manager and asking how business was. CLICK!

My brother in law had a call "about your accident" He strung them along and when it came to the details, explained how he scuffed the back of his leather shoe getting out of his car.... CLICK!

I've had one a couple of times where this very friendly and cheerful female voice calls the house. "She" babbles on about "how long it's been since we've talked". My mind absolutely boggled while this was going on: "What? Is this some obscure friend or relative of my wife that I actually should recognize? (They are legion!) Have I actually been to this woman's wedding and just tuned it all out?" . "She" was SO nice that I felt almost guilty wanting to hang up on "her"!

All of a sudden I got the vibe that this is neither friend nor family, and not even Human! This was a computer generated personality selling Insurance!

The time after that, I switched to Spanish, got "I'm sorry, I do not understand" a couple of times and then "she" hung up.

                            -next time, "she" gets German!

Of course, given the advance of technology, someday soon there won't be any language that will stump "her".

Maybe in the meantime I will study Klingon!

                            QapLa'!!!

-then again, this comes with just the hint of risk!

"My cousin Rita told me she called the house yesterday and you refused to speak English to her!"
"-and by the way, she studied German in college and she doesn't appreciate being called that!"

(What we are willing to do for comedy!)😁
