Hollywood's glamorous Egyptian Theatre reopened this week after a major restoration. It was paid for, in part, by an unusual player.
Interesting 5 minute piece on the restoration of the theater. Nice to have a real movie palace restored and ready to show 35mm, 70mm, and even rare 35mm nitrate prints
What wonderful news.
I had the pleasure of watching the movie Double Jeopardy in there, around 1999. The theatre although magnificent needed a lot of work doing on it, as it was looking a bit shabby in places. It's good to know that some of my Netflix subscription is going into some restoration projects like this.
The problem is without serious money being injected into these buildings, we will end up losing them forever, as they can never be replaced in this day and age.
The Egyptian theatre is my preference over Grauman's Chinese, as this from the last time I visited it was looking tacky and had lost all of its charm and prestige.
