Hi folks,

It has been in my head for quite long time that as part of getting fun in this forum, we should make a sort of 8mm awards for several categories.

This idea comes up after seeing the positive development in this forum lately where there are so many new registered members in 2011 and 2012.

The categories can be anything, and I would start with some as follows:

1. The oldest member (based on age)
2. The youngest member (based on age)
3. The longest members (based on registration date)
4. The most active members (based on post per capita)
5. The new most active members (only those who register in 2010-2012 based on per capita posting)
6. New comers to 8mm collecting hobby but has build up collection
7. The most active members although non film-collectors
8. Where are you know award (used to be active but just gone lately)
9. The helpful technician award
10. etc, etc...

And also some tributes to our members who have passed away in the year of 8mmforum from 2003 till now....

So how about that?. You may add with some more categories.

Can we set up a panel to nominate for each category? what do you thing moderators.

Hopefully this can be fun.

Great idea Winbert. This is a great way to recognize member contributions to the forum.

I think I win the nomination for the most posts because, "Damn! Doesn't he ever shut up?!!!" [Smile]

Winbert,

I greatly appreciate the sentiment and every member here deserves recognition, however...

Age is a voluntary input during registration. Unless every member comes forward (Graham Ritchie tried this in his Passing Years thread) there's no way of knowing who is the oldest or youngest.

Most active members: There's no easy way to tell! The software doesn't supply that information and I would have to check each member's posting records....considering the number of members we have, that would be way too time consuming. I assume Osi has more posts than anyone else, but again, that requires checking every users post total.

I believe every member tries to help out when someone has a problem. I couldn't put a value on one person's aid over another.

There is a category I can help out with:

Aside from Brad Miller, The Forum member who has been active the longest ("active" meaning posted within a period of a year) is Mr. Joe Taffis!

And Shorty.....thank you!

Doug, thanks for replying.

So pity that the forum software does not capable to cater those info. I thought, as other forum (phpbb) software, it can make a lot of users graphic.

Anyway congratulation to Joe Taffis.

Doug, if I may know apart those June 2003 members like you and me, any older than that? When this forum was started?

...and as Brad Miller is no.2....WHO IS NO. 1....???

Winbert,

Brad started the 8mm Forum in 2000. The great server crash of May 2003 took it offline and all member records went with it. The Forum returned a month later and we started over with member number one, who is.....Daryl O'Shea, the administrator. Brad is member number 2. In addition to Joe (#4), still posting in 2012 are:
Brad Kimball (5)
Tony Milman (not often enough!) (7)
Bob Pucci (8)
Jim Schrader (9)
Joe Caruso (11)
Steve Klare (12)
Mal Brake (14)
Steven Sigel (21)
Paul Adsett (25)
Lance Alspaugh (27)
and me (member #28)!

Winbert, you are member #58, so there are just a few more Forum members to go!

Doug

Hi Doug,

Good to know (and thanks for) a little history of this forum.

I have just visited Daryl O'Shea' profile, his last post was back in 2007. Where is he now? And it is surprising to know that he lives in Ontario, Canada.

I love to see the past (history) and re-read for what had happened especially if it is related to me. So I just googled for old posts, and amazingly I found my post back in April 14, 1997 in the-used-to-be called dejanews forum (now google). So it was 15 years ago !!!...and here is my first contact with super 8mm in the internet era:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.photo.misc/brows e_thread/thread/7f614fb192f7edc1/f60921451f57f04c?hl=en#f60921451f57f04c

See... it is really funny to see how cheap they were offered at that time, i.e $9 - $17/each in Australian dollar which was half US$ at that time. So it was US$4.5 - $8.5 for those kind of films!!

ps: I was studying in Australia at that time and was still SINGLE !! [Big Grin]

Now.....this is my first contact with this forum.

http://groups.google.com/group/ alt.movies.cinematography.super8/browse_thread/thread/1744b47f6e910cf1/f59ae9d39193a0c?hl=en&q=#0f59ae9d39193a0c

It was still in the same forum (dejanews) where (the late) Tim Christian advised me to visit this very forum. Although that post was made in 2005 but when I visited this forum I found that I had registered two years before. Therefore I got my members #58 by June 2003. I just forgot this forum and never came back again until Tim reminded me. [Razz]

And here is my first post after re-visiting this forum:

http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001143

ps: I was already in Fiji at that time. Now in Canada.

Doug, (or Brad) may I know what is the address of this forum before got crashed? I want to re-visit it using www.archive.org (way back machine) I want to see what you guys discussed 12 years ago.... [Big Grin]

...can you tell us please?

I second that nomination Thomas. Frank has been absolutely brillant at coming to my aid and so many others to help solve our projector problems. He's been my mentor...I'm so obsessed with projectors now that I think he's created a monster [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Although most of us here are collectors, not good sellers, but I would like to nominate for the Entrepreneurship award to.....

ALAN RIK

[Wink]

ps: this is based on my personal view when he listed on Ebay, he would try to give the best photos angle of the items as many as he can, explain in details, good service, etc, etc...
