I will buy the smaller trailers and special cut downs new but the features, except for Grease Scope I have purchased second hand. There must not be that many people buying new because the second hand lists look smaller and smaller everyday. For instance: Here is a copy of the list of Titles on Derann's list of a October 2001: 695 : POLTERGEIST II, 3x180m ’scope/stereo - A - £169.99
1986. Spine shivering sequel with good special effects. JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson star.
696 : ALIEN, 4x180m ‘scope/stereo - A - £199.99
1979. Scary and highly successful shocker starring Tom Skerritt and Sigourney Weaver. No longer
available new.
710 : THE SWORD IN THE STONE, 1x450m (fits 360m capacity machine) - A - £99.99
1963. Animated Disney tale in which a young forest boy becomes King Arthur. Plastic container with original label.
732 : STAR WARS, 4x180m ’scope/stereo - A - £299.99
1977. One of the top grossing films of all time and an early print without negative marks. No longer
available new. Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford star.
733 : THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, 4x120m - A - £79.99
1974. Cult horror thriller directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Marilyn Burns. Slight colour fade.
736 : DRACULA, 5x120m - A - £169.99
1958. Definitive re-make of the 1931 original. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee star.
737 : KING KONG, 6x120m b/w (on b/w film stock) - A - £99.99
1933. The greatest monster movie of them all, full of trickery and suspense. Robert Armstrong, Faye Wray and Bruce Cabot star.
741 : THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, 5x120m - A - £149.99
1958. Lively fantasy with superb Ray Harryhausen special effects. Kerwin Mathews and Kathryn Grant star. Some light red printing marks in places (all prints similar). No longer available.
745 : A BUG’S LIFE, 4x180m ’scope/stereo - A - £179.99
1998. Excellent computer animated Disney feature. A saving of £100 on a new print!
I mean take a look at that list? That was an incredible time of revival for Super 8. I can't remember the last time I saw Bugs Life on a list. And Star Wars..? I have seen it but unless you are caller number 7.. you will not get the title. I love the feature length films but it is so ironic that the whole nature of Super 8 was supposed to be amateur and low cost yet the films cost SO much money new. I assume that in 2001 Derann were probably producing more films as well.

I haven't bought a new feature for a few years but I've bought quite a few in the past and I would again if it was a title I really wanted. Whenever any of us buys a used print, maybe for a bargain price, we have reason to be grateful to whoever bought it new - as otherwise there would be no new releases and such opportunities wouldn't exist!
Buying new Super 8 prints has never been an economical hobby, but prices have not kept pace with inflation. I recall that the last Walton price list I saw, from about 1981, had 200' reels going for something like £19.99, so it's surprising that the going rate for a new 200' is now as low as £26. I also recall 'Aliens' being about £379 when it was first released on Super 8 around 1988, so it's quite something that M&C (which is virtually the same length) is 'only' £349.99!
