The past two day when Ive tried to play a film it starts jumping up and down and dosent stop I ordered a new belt to hope it fixes the problem. Could it be anything else? The projector is a gaf 3000s. Austin

Hi Austin. It’s always worth replacing an old main drive belt but I doubt it is the cause of your problem.
It’s more likely a very worn film or a film transport problem so check out the Gaf as follows. Your Gaf machine is the same as the 1970’s Chinon 8000 so might be worth changing the topic heading to Gaf/Chinon 8000 help.
Looking at the numbered picture.. 1/ You can inch the mechanism on this machine by hand forwards and backwards which is a great help fault finding. With the projector disconnected from the mains try to thread a film inching by hand as see what the leader does as it goes through the film path and guides. Remember to correctly trim the film leader end before you start and its best to use a film white leader to best see what’s going on.
2/At the top sprocket make sure the film is seating properly between the sprocket and plastic lower guide.
3/Do the same again for the larger lower sprocket and plastic guide.
4/It is important that the film is sitting properly in the gate so that the claw which pulls the film a frame at a time is aligned correctly. If it isn’t or perhaps the top loop is lost the film will jump on screen.
Once the film has reached the left take up spool you can then turn your main control from threading to forward and inch again. Keep a close eye on your top film loop and also just below the gate to see where it is getting lost first.
It could be you have a very shrunken film on your hands and the Gaf is being fussy.

Austin, do yourself a favor and instead of buying prints save up for a better projector like a Elmo. I am not trying to be a meanie; once you get a quality projector you will notice the difference. IMHO, the only thing about that projector that is a plus is that it uses a 150W Lamp.

That is very good advice from Joe, Austin. Your prints deserve the best projector that you can afford, nothing worse than putting a much loved film into an electronic mincing machine.

I have to agree with the previous two posts. I bought a Chinon projector about a year and a half ago and it has since stopped projecting film well. Instead of trying to fix it and risk ruining my film I opted to save my money and will be purchasing a better projector soon.
