Hi all... So glad to have found this place. I am a total novice when it comes to film and am embarking on a project to telecine all of my family's old home movies via my DSLR. I recently picked up a Chinon 2500GL and have been having fun playing with that. I am sure I will have more questions as I delve into this project, but to start... Does anyone recognize the type of reel in this picture? My understanding is that both regular 8mm and Super 8 use a circular hole with three notches (just different sizes). This one looks square shaped, and has two notches, which are not even aligned on both sides of the reel! It definitely has an 8mm film wound on it (see the small piece I placed in the photo).

The problem is I can't get the reel to fit on the projector's supply arm due to the notch differences. I have ordered a spare 400ft reel I guess I could wind it onto. I wondered also about trying to cut out a third notch to try to make it fit.

But before I do anything I thought I would ask you fine people to see if you had any ideas as to what that reel was designed to fit.

Thanks guys! I am loving playing with all this stuff.

It is a 16mm film reel but must've been altered to allow a 8mm film to fit on it?
I do have one that has been altered for a 9.5mm film with two extra holes to hold the reel [Wink]

Cheers from me in New Zealand :-)

Hi Dan,

Your concern has been raised here:

Does this reel fit on ST-1200?

The film shown is standard (regular) 8, your projector is a dual gauge machine, but it will need a Super 8 spool for its take-up.

The spool shown is a 16mm which appears to be modified for use on a standard 8 projector. Note that it will not fit on a Super 8 spindle due to the fact that Super 8 spools have a larger hole.

Thanks guys for the welcome and helpful info. I wish my grandfather were still around to ask why he used such a reel to hold an 8mm film since it won't fit on an 8mm projector! Ah well, I will thread it onto a standard reel so I can watch it.

I'm sure I will be back with more questions. In the meantime I will keep reading and learning here. Thanks again.
