Soundbars seem to becoming popular. I see a lot of them for sale at WalMart and Best Buy. Anybody here have any experience with them, or are they no substitute for a proper surround sound system?

I bought one for my Mom from Walmart when she was complaining she couldn't hear the TV. After getting the soundbar connected...she then complained it was too loud As Pat said ... they are no replacement for a good sound system...but the ones with a sub-woofer do an excellent job ...take up less space and cost less then an amplifier and speakers.

There's not a lot in this world than makes me feel older than going to a store that sells consumer electronics lately. TVs don't have a coax input (never mind an antenna!), "stereos" seem to be evolving into docking ports for cell phones (your chance to lose all your music at the same time) and Heaven forbid you should walk into a place looking for a "pair of speakers!".
I bought a new car this year: there is still a steering wheel, a gas pedal and a brake pedal and they act like the ones on my old car.
-at least that much I can still count on!

Well put, Steve.
It's Bose's fault. He/they were the first to appear to "ignore" the laws of physics with compact designs that outperformed the size. They did it via shrewd acoustic engineering and electronic compensation.
Good sound takes money, space and a little effort. If you got none 'o that, and your ears don't care, why not a sound bar? But I agree with you all - it's not the same as a "real" system.

I bought a Sony sound bar to make up for the woeful speakers in my TV and certainly they provide a richer, more substantial sound. The bar I have comes with a subwoofer and the ability to extent to additional surround speakers but my flat is so cluttered I'd never find the additional speakers!
