In the manual for the ST1200HD it says simply to have the motor off before selecting the speed.

I was in the middle of watching a silent speed film at 24 fps and wanted to change to 18fps, so I turned the projector to the off position (the middle position), but the selector switch on the back seems really tight. I didn't push particularly hard, mainly because I'm worried about damaging the mechanism as it seems really stiff. Is this normal? Should I just push harder? Does it matter if I have film in the film path (again, the motor is off)?

It requires a lot of force to move this thing.

The thing about it is it's not a nice electrical switch that you can move with a finger, but a ponderous mechanical lever attached to fulcrums and springs and rollers (and an electrical switch too.)

Mine has enough problems seating the rollers in place when I shift gears that a few years back I consigned this machine to 24FPS only and go with a different machine for 18FPS. (-one with a nice electrical switch that you can move with a finger.)
