The double image is a strange one, Clinton. These movies were originally designed to be projected using two film prints and the polarized 3D system, which is much superior than anaglyphic 3D, but can't recall seeing an anaglyphic print with double image plus the 3D colours - not surprised it doesn't work.
As you probably know, the anaglyphic, two colour 3D prints were actually cheap versions made in the 60's and 70's to cash in on the 3D effect by being projectable in a normal cinema.
If you've seen the Blu-ray releases of these titles you'll know that they do a much better job of recreating the original 3D image as was intended.
With the anaglyphic super 8 prints being reductions and mass produced it was presumably quite tricky to reproduce the exact colour balance of the red / blue or red / cyan and print density of the originals, so I think the 3D effect in my experience is best described as variable.
My own copy of Creature from Universal 8 works ok to a point, as does It Came From Outer Space, with a couple of jump in your seat moments...although overall it is pretty much headache inducing with a lot of double imaging.
I had a print of The Mad Magician once which just didn't work at all; one problem was that it was printed far too light.
Also, not all anaglyphic systems the same colours. The most common version I think is red / cyan, but some 3D glasses use different coloured filters intended for different prints (red / green, red / blue), so it's worth checking that the glasses are correct for the print being shown and indeed that the orientation of glasses is right for the print - I have some 3D paper specs which are labelled right eye / left eye, but actually need to be the other way around for the super 8 prints!
And as we all know, colour fade of the cyan / green element will not help at all.

Rob - You have provided me,and this forum, with some valuable information regarding the 3D image and effect, so thanks for that.I,for one,was unaware that there were different combinations of coloured glasses ( red/green, red/blue, red/cyan)for different prints. My "creature" film works wonderfully so thankfully have got the right colour combination glasses.
Clinton - If you are in possession of the various combinations of glasses, I would be interested to know the outcome after you have tested them all, and whether you found a pair suitable.

I had another go this afternoon, tried different lenses, different colours, swapped them from one eye to the other. I also,as suggested, didn't concentrate too much on any one point on the screen and got better results, still slightly double imaged but watchable, have to admit that watching the whole short film was a mission and not one I will watch again for a while. And as I've said before,I am still happy to have it in my collection
