Thanks to the members and mods of this excellent forum! My Grandfather was a photographer and home movie maker and I saved his old reels from the dumpster back in 1975 but never viewed them. Recently I borrowed a Sankyo from a friend to take a look at what I had but that machine needed a belt. I would like to fix it before returning it so if there is a how-to please direct me After a month on CL I found a Bolex that a lady was giving away as it had no plug or reels. I have the original manual for the Bolex but I assume that such a popular model has scans available already. My Swiss Miss is up and running even though the 78-year-old film can be balky at times. Pictures should show the machine and the cases the film came in. The marquetry one was made by my grandfather. Note the nice aluminum reel on the Bolex. The film in the metal canisters is pre-war nitrate stock and is completely burned up. Nice reels though!

Welcome to the forum David. The Bolex 18-5 is a fine machine made to Bolex's legendary Swiss precision standards. I have one myself, and it is the only 8mm silent machine that I will entrust to project my families 70 year old Kodachrome home movies. It is extremely kind to film and will never scratch a single frame if you keep it clean. Barry Fritz is our resident Bolex 18-5 expert. He has many different 18-5 versions in his collection. So if you need any kind of 18-5 help Barry is the man.

Janice, thank you for sharing that video. I will replace the belt and return the Sankyo to my friend.
Paul, thanks for your response. So many cool features on this machine. The Glow-in-the-dark switch impressed my 11-year-old twins. I checked the database and there is n 18-5 manual listed. I will PDF mine and send it along.

Very well done! I just found the original inside the case cover and glued it in place. I am missing the outside one but I will leave that for now.
