And another bright idea!

Not really a fan of taking faulty end of life cine equipment to the recycling centre as once its gone, well its gone.

My Eumig 65XL as used in the feature film Super 8 had finally given up and I wasn't sure quite what to do with it. After a bit of pondering I decided to make a decorative table lamp which I think these days they call retro. Hmm

Anyone else come up with ideas for Cine equipment that's passed its sell by date?

I dig it, Lee. The retro bulb is an extra nice touch. No changes for my equipment yet. But this is a great idea if the time comes.

There is a kind of theme in the world out there: People can't conceive of ever using this gear for what it was meant for in the first place, so they transfer all the film and "re-purpose" the gear!

Fruit Basket

I remember an episode of "American Pickers" a few years ago where they found a 16mm projector in a barn. Mike said "This will be great decor in someone's media room!".

What disgusted me was he didn't ask the question he always does: "Does it work?". If it was a hundred year old water pump or an 80 year old radio, of course he would!

Then again, I guess it's better than finding it all out at the curb! (-especially finding out a day too late!)

There seems to be a 'recycled retro' opportunity here which some people are adopting to make some money. I know several individuals who are seeking out not just redundant items but perfectly usable projectors and cameras of all gauges to cannibalize and retrofit as lamps or 'industrial ornements'. Does this upset anyone else?

Absolutely!

It's a waste of potential.

This stuff was built to bring happiness to people: learning, comedy, drama, music.

-not exist as a kitschy doo-dad!

I managed to bring a machine to life that sat new and unused in the box for 40 years recently. I felt kind of like I was freeing it to its destiny!

Yep, I agree, stupidist thing I ever heard and getting more and more common by the day! They used to do the same thing years back with the old candlestick telephones...they would drill a hole through the top of the brass transmitter housing and install a lamp socket and wire the switch hook to the electric line so when you lift the receiver the lamp would turn on! Many thousands of those candlestick telephones were ruined as a result! The same thing now with vintage Atwater Kent speakers being bought up in the thousands and turned into bluetooth speakers. Perfectly fine vintage Singer sewing machines being thrown away and the treadle bases retrofited with a tabletop, ect, ect, ect!!!

Don't really go for it myself but sometimes things have a whole lot more meaning than face value.

Originally this was a close friends camera who I've mentioned before we made many films together now passed. Camera also died beyond repair so every time I now look at that lamp having been recycled it brings back a whole lot of memories and knowing his humour he would see the funny side and approve. Oh nostalgic me.

Plucking up courage to watch the films he left me I came across the first we made doing a sound test film with said camera, nice to see that with me pressing the button.

You've made a display of defunct equipment for sentimental purposes. That's fine. In other cases similar cameras often wind up where the coffee grounds and empty milk cartons go.

-it's killing off working equipment to make a hat rack or mail box that gets us!

Another one is there's somebody out there that cannibalizes Elmo sound projectors to make film transfer machines. I'm sure his technical thinking is sound, but I played one of the Derann Fantasia extracts on a similar machine last night: that's what these are meant do!

(It's like seeing someone turn a sports car into a golf cart!)

True.

We get quite a few TV programmes in the UK doing arty thang to old kit as it's fashionable. All they do is make feel out of a different ice age.

Finished going true his films which featured some really creative camera work and some of those were from 1967
