I think Chips statement is partially true.
I've used cores very frequently in 35mm and 16mm, as have most collectors of those gauges. However, it seems that in 8mm collecting, cores are very rare and collectors of that particular gauge do not have much experience.
Jim, unless you possess an 8mm split reel, you would probably have difficulty with cores. As Chip suggested, perhaps just some smaller reels.
Regarding the use of cores in general, on 8mm, I would be a bit worried about handling anything larger than 50ft or so on cores. The gauge is too narrow and, even when tightly wound, may be asking for trouble. But, that's just my perception. I may be wrong. Perhaps the lightness of the gauge would compensate for this?
