Just got back from an early showing of the new film about Laurel and Hardy, thought it was very good and quite moving in places as well as funny,well worth going to see,Mark.

As a dedicated fan of L&H I would love to see this film. Is Stan and Ollie the title?
Where did you see it Mark? And who played the title roles and were they convincing in looks and acting?

I would imagine it will be coming to the US,it's a collaboration with a studio and the BBC.

I saw it in Hemel Hempstead,We were invited to an early showing as we have an upgraded cinema card,my son and I went and we both enjoyed it,all ages were there. The title is called Stan and Ollie and a true story based on a UK 1953 tour. Steve Coogan plays Stan and John C. Reilly plays Ollie and they were both very good,Hardy's make up was superb,Mark

I read that it's being released next week. No doubt someone will pick it up for a Stateside release, especially if it does well here. A few enquiries at a local cinema might alert folk of it's existence across the pond. A friend saw it at the London Film Festival and told me how good it was.

Film is being released in the States on the 28th December and here in the U.K. on the 11th January. Would have likd it to be the other way round.

Parts of the film were shot here in Bristol last summer. The side street next to the Bristol Hippodrome, Bristol city docks next to the M shed museum, and on-board the Waverleyship. I love Laurel and Hardy, having many titles on super 8 so wonderful to have city associated with this new film.

Laurel & Hardy played the Bristol Hippodrome in July 1947.
I saw them one Thursday afternoon when they judged the finals of the Modern Venus bathing beauty competition at The Pool in Weston-super-Mare where I lived at that time.

Nice you went Mark.
A entertainer friend of mine went to see the boys in Manchester on one of the UK tours memorable stories. He had been writing to Stan prior. The film will be shown at Stockport Plaza next year and we are getting local collectors together at the screening after all what film fan would not have a Laurel and Hardy in the collection.

The press pack I picked up was very nice for the film.

Tom, I long ago discovered that the film arm of the BBC produces some entertaining stuff and I tend to look out for their productions. I particularly enjoyed 'Suite Francaise' which received very good reviews (picked it up for 5op) and 'Far from the Madding Crowd'. We've watched a somewhat older film 'Her Majesty Mrs. Brown' a number of times and always enjoy it. They appear to co-produce with another company. A member of the local L&H tent saw Stan and Ollie'at at the London Film Festival and said 'You must go and see it. Having met and talked to them and their wives on the train at Snow Hill Station, Birmingham, wild horses won't keep me away.

Still don't like the idea of 'betrayal', (Zenobia), when Babe worked without him - It wasn't like that, his contract called for one more film and Stan was having trouble with the studio (Roach) - Creating an unnecessary dramatic moment to sell the film doesn't wash, it creates false impressions on many who don't know and all else - Fraternally, Shorty

My curiosity, we all knew them as "Laurel & Hardy" but the film was titled as "Stan & Ollie" using their first names, any reason behind that?

Possibly it is not called Oliver and Hardy to make it clear it is about them, not actually one of their films.

That's the only reason I can think of.

Hi all,

yes certainly looking forward to this movie..although I do struggle as to how much of the funding was provided by U.K. licence payers as if it has I would be expecting a quick TV release for the BBC...as in essence the licence payer has an investment in it.

I saw the film and liked it very much. While it does occasionally fall into certain biopic cliches, the performances of all involved and the film's obvious fondness for its subjects make for a very enjoyable time.
