Has anyone compiled a complete list of all releases? If so, is it available? If not, why don't we?

I would imagine that would be a Herculean task Vidar, as I doubt
very much that all releases would be owned by all members,
remember there are a lot of people out there that aren't, apart from
the sheer number of titles out there from different companies in different countries.

Sure, but if all send in info about what they know, it would add up to a database to maintain until noone has anymore info. One need to start somewhere. I use www.atarimania.com for my Atari interest and find loads of good info, though it might never be 100%

Vidar,

I understand what you want to do, but imagine compiling a complete list of books ever published.

-all languages, genres and editions...ever!

Here's the challenge:

There's a small corner of Super-8 film that I am fond of: railroad films.

There is one distributor of films in this genre that (for what little it's worth) I may be the world's leading authority on: Sunday River Productions.

-yet after thirty years of collecting their titles I found one I'd never heard of about a month ago.

So a listing of Super-8 titles may get huge, but never, ever become even close to complete! A complete list of the companies that made them would be bad enough.

That's part of the joy of all this, that there is so much out there that there are still plenty of surprises.

-enjoy!

Okay, alone it's impossible, but I thought as much info is better than no info ...

Vidar,

I see your high enthusiasm after finding back the 8mm collecting hobby. Hope you can keep this enthusiasm so this forum will always have new people.

But as it's been said by others, that will be a massive list which no one will never to finish.

Please remember that it is NOW super 8mm films become collectable items, but long time ago, they were just normal formats for entertainment. Same thing to VHS, LD or DVD nowadays, no one will be able to compile a full list because it will have so many genres, film interest, etc, etc.

HOWEVER, your idea is not new. Someone here has started it by opening an open list for us to add what we have.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0A hNSqJgx18PidGxKbmJzdG56YnVfRzBXWFpJcXZtanc&authkey=CPysx6QC&authkey=CPysx6QC#gid=0

It was created by Kirk Anderson (he never showed up here again btw).

But as others have said, it is a never end list... [Wink]

Vidar,I honestly don't think you'll even scratch the surface,the
sites that Laksmi kindly put up are on the whole, mainstream titles.
Here in the UK, we had Derann Films that before they released
their blockbuster stuff, started life as a hire library for std 8mm
and a host of titles that were not available anywhere else, the
totally obscure stuff that I thrived on.Then theres the Italian
releases, granted a lot of it pirated, but releases non the less, and
how would you even attempt to bottom them. Then theres the
French and German films that aren't mainstream, apart from
other countries like Spain,South Africa, Japan etc all churning
out films at a fair rate in the day, this is a job that no one could
undertake without physical records, and I nearly forgot the
"White Box Specials" from DFS.I would just be resolved to say
that whatever the title,it is out there somewhere, official or
otherwise and that's the magic, searching them out.

And of course the famous website:

http://www.super-8-hobby.de/rezent-a.htm

that illustrates hundreds of German versions of English films as well as the Germany films.

The page I show above is only a little part of this enormous collections. Have a browse and you will find them.

Way to go Winbert, can you imagine that at the time, even the
supermarkets on the Continent stocked these titles on their
shelves as a matter of course.Shopping must have been a long,
pleasurable and expensive experience with many husbands
actually enjoying it.

It would be fairly impossible, as there are always those releases that seem to pop up out of nowhere, that none of us (even the great Meltzer!), even knew existed ...

but then, that's the fun of this hobby!
