Hello everyone.
Made time tonite to watch (or attempt to watch) a 400' Derann reel. "The Maltese Falcon". Needless to say I was thrilled to get this. I cleaned it upon arrival and got *lots* of rusty ick on the cleaning cloth.
The pattern left on the cloth suggests it's coming from sound stripes. I let the cleaning solution dry. Tonite, I rewound the film, wiping it with a soft cloth as it went. Still got lots of rust.
I played the film and immediately after the opening credits the film started to chatter. I did the usual switch to thread and then back to forward and the film played normal for a second then right back to chatter. Countless attempts at correction yielded nothing.

Clean the projectors film path. I use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and clean everywhere the film touches. Be careful not to get bits of cotton into the workings of the projector. I then apply a light coat of pure beeswax to the film path and wipe off the excess. I don't put the beeswax on the sound head just because I'm not sure if it will hurt anything. Most of my films are silent so I don't use my sound projector much.
