Hans,

I'm amazed! There are a number of Ken Films titles (and one from Columbia) on your list that weren't released here in sound:

When dinosaurs ruled the world, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound
Master of terror, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
Vampire and the ballerina, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
-Trog, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
-The thing, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
Varan the unbelievable, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
-Rodan, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
-The monster that challenged the world, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.
The curse of the mummy’s tomb, 1x 60m/200ft, b&w/sound, n.o.b.

Could you please confirm that these are sound? If they are sound I'll take whichever ones you have left! Thanks!

Doug

Darn Doug! I wish I had seen those first... let me/us know how they turn out. I recently picked up a sound print of "Dinosaurus" from overseas. It had German sound but the English subtitles were still there. I think a number of these old Ken prints were striped in Europe and then recorded in whichever language was appropriate. I also bought on Ebay Germany a Revenge of Frankenstein 200' black and white digest in sound... but with a very dupey picture.

I rather don't copy paste from another forum, but on the other film forum nobody noticed the list with these films, so I will post it over here too:

I have a couple of 200ft b/w digest which have English sub-titles and have no spoken language.
But they do have music and sound effects.

01-Varan, the unbelievable (on hold for Patrick)
02-Rodan (on hold for Patrick)
03-The Monster that challenged the world (on hold for Terry)
04-The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (on hold for Hugh)
05-The Mummy's Tomb (on hold for John)
06-The Mummy's Ghost
07-War of the Worlds (on hold for Terry)
08-Master of Terror
09-The Vampire and the Ballerina (on hold for Hugh)
10-Trog
11-The Thing (on hold)
12-Bride of Frankenstein (on hold for John)
13-When Dinosaurs ruled the World

As an example I recorded 2 of them, Varan and Rodan.
Unfortunately the belt from my Elmo SC-30 broke after a few minutes of Rodan.
And I recorded Varan with 18 fps instead of 24 fps.
I understand Brian already bought such a film from Germany.
Did it have spoken language in German, or just music and sound effects like mine?

http://youtu.be/D6Cj76cYbOI

PS So in theory no. 6, 8, 10 and 13 are on hold for Doug (sorry Brian).

The Revenge of Frankenstein I had from Germany had German dialogue. It was from the actual film's soundtrack. Those two prints you posted are interesting. It sounds like someone went through a lot of wotk to record all the sound effects...

And yes, Doug got to you first on those other titles... but if he passes on any of them I'll take them.

I asked Hans right after the list was posted about "The monster that challenged the world" because it was never released in the U.S.A. with sound. I have both the long and short silent Super 8mm
versions. Its a shame that UA Eight didn't release it with sound because they previously offered Regular 8mm sound titles. If I remember correctly, UA was strictly silent prints in Super 8mm until Derann struck a deal with them.

Hans did you record and/or made the soundtrack or it originally came like that.

Can answer here...?

The Monster that challenged the world
The Thing
War of the Worlds

Now paid for Hans!

Thanks for posting those links - Varan sure does have a groovy soundtrack!

My plan is to attempt to rerecord the films from the actual films - this could get interesting.(and time consuming)

Have had some good luck doing this though, recently, by rerecording the German soundtrack from the War Of The Gargantuas to English.

Will anybody else be doing this?

Cheers
Terry

Winbert: no I didn't record the sound.
These films came this way.

Terry: these films have a musical score and sound effects added.
But there are no spoken dialogues. Instead there are super imposed titles, probably because these are original silent versions.

PS I accidentily called the titles, title cards. But there is of course a difference between the two. These films have superimposed titles.

I remember myself recording soundtracks to the 200' "War of
the Worlds" from reel to reel tape likewise with "When Dinosaurs
Ruled the Earth".I was very pleased as both had great sync.I gave them away when I obtained the features so they are out there somewhere. One I still have is the double feature cutdowns of
the Americom "Curse of Frankenstein" and "Horror of Dracula" as
the best way I thought was to record onto stripe from the record
which I transfered to 1/4 inch tape, marked the points of sync
on the tape, reversed the reels on the recorder, switched reverse
on the projector switched play on tape and got the exact point
of sync on where each scene would begin. The Elmo ST1200m/o
was the machine I used as I overlapped recordings and could
slip in a new recording without any clicks or bumps from the
amplifier.Even though the films are at 18fps they are quite good
and save all the hassle with floppy discs.
