For what it's worth Austin,the most respected of projector
manufacturers is without doubt EUMIG. These people have been
making cine gear for a long time and their reputation is second
to none.Any projector made by this company is reliable and
extremely kind to film.As Michael rightly says,save up your pocket
money and buy a good machine.Another very good line of
machines were made by the Elmo company,their ST1200s being
excellent for the showman,with good light output and a very good amplifier.The drawback with all the Elmo's was the cheap
plastic track and film guides that did cause scratching on prints
and unless you are handy at DIY,for the fitting of extra rollers,
then go for EUMIG,they are the most used and trusted and will
treat your film with loving care.

Hi Chris,not as a bad I hope as my experience of ELMO, I bought
my first ST1200M/O when they first appeared in the mid '70s,
and after a time,I noticed nice green scratches on my prints,
put there by the the crappy plastic guides,I wasn't the only
victim,and the late Paul van Someren advised we all write to
ELMO with our concerns.ELMO finally remade the tracks and guides,supposedly out of a stronger material that scratched the
films just the same after time.After replacing a lot of prints,I
fitted additional rollers throughout the projector to rectify very
sloppy Japanese manufacture.The GS1200 was the same,too
much attention to complicated switches and not enough to
film care.I have three ELMO projectors,all modified,two st1200s
that aren't and about half a dozen EUMIGS which are totally
reliable.The only faults I could find with EUMIG would be the
silly co axial reels and the worm & pin focusing,as for care of
film,I can't praise them too highly.If you want reliability Austin,
get yourself a FUMEO 9119,which I think is too expensive for
you,or one of the early EUMIG projectors that are semi auto
thread and won't break the bank or harm your films.

Here's a thought Austin,over in the UK,people that are selling
or buying sometimes put a little notice in the local shop or
Post Office for their wants etc.Can you do the same where you live
because there must be literally thousands of unused projectors
and other ancillary cine equipment in attics,spare rooms,garages,
sheds,cupboards, that people would be only to happy to sell you.
Remember this used to be a mass market,and it was very prolific.
As for GAF projectors,alas I have no experience of,but if you stick with trusted names like EUMIG,ELMO,BAUER,BOLEX etc
then you should be okay.I know what it's like,and so does every
member on here,when you want to have a top flight projector
and a private film library with all your favourite films,you will
get them Austin,but get a good machine first,and all the rest
will follow.Once word gets about in your neighbourhood,that
there is a film collector in their midst,you'll be suprised what will come your way.
