Very true Kevin, as has been spoken on here many times.
Also sad but true, is the fact that we will never see the likes again. The sheer amount of full length feature releases they put out in the mid 90's was just incredible given the era.

In hindsight many believe they actually released TOO many at once which meant obviously collectors couldn't buy them all as they were released then very often discontinued shortly afterwards, and therefore that is perhaps the reason why some didn't really sell that many copies. Maybe had they have been spread out a little more over time there would now be more of each of those prints around now for us to hunt down.

To have taken full advantage of what was on offer from Derann in that era, you really needed your long lost Auntie Vera to have popped her clogs in 1995 leaving you her two Rolls Royce's and her beloved six acre 17th century stately home in Richmond only for you to blow the lot on Cine Film!!

I agree that perhaps Derann did issue too much, and some of the output couldn't have sold very well.
I have a 400' Super 8 in a box labelled "The Hilarious Adventures of Gil Lamb Ghost Buster".
It's actually just "Ghost Buster" (1952) is which Gil Lamb takes on two parts. It's supposed to be a comedy but it's not at all funny, in fact, it's atrocious. How Derek ever issued it I'll never know.

When you look back to some of the titles that were released. I too wondered how they ever sold some of them. And it was not only Derann, all the others that had super 8 releases had their fare share of crap too.

When I started collecting in the mid 70's, I also hire on the block booking scheme, so had a 'new' programme every two weeks.

They were quite a few that were not really worth hiring, never mind buying.

One reason that they were so many releases was proberly to do with the rights on super 8mm. Each deal with say Fox could have been for 10 titles over two years. After which they lost the super 8 rights.

They are still quite a few titles that I wish I had bought, but of course I too didn't have an Auntie Vera.

Bought Fun And Fancy Free a couple of weeks ago, it was a bit like old times from Gary.

I even missed some from Walton, Powell, PM Films. Although if it was only released flat and was filmed in scope I did put off buying.

Yes I noticed that Gary said the "Fun & Fancy Free" film he was selling wasn't a Derann copy despite the fact it had good colour etc. So who did release it then David?

It should be a warning for all of us. The English sentence "Use it while you can." applies to filmstock (for those who have still a movie camera) and to new releases from CHC and The Real Image. I know it is not cheap but the filmstock providers ans the film sellers need our support.

This is the very last Derann 8mm Used List September 2nd, 2011 5:00PM GMT

Personally, I ordered about 8 from this list and after all the dust had settled I got NONE of them. There was a world of people watching for this and the buying was frenzied!

FINAL NEWSLETTER
FILMS FOLLOW THIS IMPORTANT ANOUNCMENT
It is with deep regret that I have to announce, Derann will cease trading next month.

This has been brought on by a number of factors, but in essence is due to the astronomical rising costs that the local council, insurance and utility companies continue to impose on small businesses.
Only 2 months ago, we had a 40% and 45% rise in our gas and electricity bills – now we have been informed that our rates and business insurance will more than double upon renewal (due in part to the riots no doubt).

With the continuing decline, in general to the High Street trade, I have had to make the very difficult decision of whether to continue - of which I can see no upturn, not just in the coming months, but possibly in the next 2 or 3 years.

I would like first and foremost to thank the loyal friends (as I have long since ceased to view you as ‘customers’) who have been buying from Derann over the past 30 or so years.
I would also like to thank all the staff with whom I have grown up and worked with for over 25+ years. I sincerely wish them and you all the very best for the future.

This is also going to mean that the Northern Film Collectors Convention will not be organised by Derann this year – of course, another dealer may wish to be the organiser and I have no problem if this is the case.

Customers and dealers who have sent in Blackpool deposits will get a full refund.

We are having a final clearance / closing down sale on Sunday 11th September – can I stress, this is not a standard Open Day, there will not be a film show or a Bring and Buy table, but there will be coffee available – This will be your last chance to pick up that elusive 8mm / 16mm title or accessory, PLUS of course, any electrical piece of AV equipment or connecting lead – AT PRICES CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN TRADE.

I hope to see you on the 11th, and in closing wish you all the very best for the future.
Adrian

More legendary was the buyer who purchased Derann's two Xenon GS1200s. These were the machines used at Blackpool over the years and also in the projection room upstairs in the Derann cinema. I believe the gentleman is on the forum here and has written about these machines in the past.

I am about to edit together some footage of Derann's last day, ready for showing at the collector's dinner in Blackpool this year. I have also had two old cartridges of 64T Super 8 processed recently and there was some footage on there which I had forgotten about...the queue forming outside Derann for that last time.

Legend has it that those last few weeks after the sad announcement were manic in the film dept. with serious amounts of film sold.

Thanks Andrew.

I am also thinking about filming using my Bell & Howell Filmosound 8 that weekend. Members will remember this was a camera that synchronised itself to a tape recorder so that sound could be recorded. Then, when being projected, the same tape recorder synchronises itself with the projector. Could be different!

You have one of the only "live sound" cameras in the world left there Simon. I know the top Beaulieu 6008 can do the same. Now that would be a find if anyone still had the pro tape recorder as well!

I am that gentleman who purchased both the xenon machines from Derann , these had all the mods done by bill I believe, and ran very well and still do. They came with two spare Toshiba lamps, and Adrian I'm sure told me the shop machine had only been used a couple of time a year so the lamp was virtually new, and the show one was recently replaced before I had them. They were on ebay first, which is how I spotted them because of the phone number, I live about 3 miles from the shop !!!!. I went the next day and the deal was done, I also purchased the elmo toolkit for a fiver, it looked new. If my memory serves me correctly the only other GS1200 in the shop was sold that day too.

I certainly miss Derann Films and especially Gary, a great employee and someone that I personally considered a "distant" friend.

... and those used film lists were a treasure trove of grand bits!

I was there at that sad day. Buying my last films from them, one was a badly miss-priced trailer for "Hello Dolly" thankfully Ged didn't charge me the £80 that appears on the price sticker.
The mention in that list of coffee being available reminded me that they said it should have been, but that when the turned the machine on it promptly went "bang" and was useless - a machine that appreciated the end was coming I think.

I had to go to the last days trading no matter what as Derek was so kind to me and encouraging in the early 70's as with other youngsters I got to know then. It was a sad day indeed to watch even the Rank gong being sold off the wall but for those of us sentimental types it was lovely to purchase some nice keepsakes to remind us of that movie business which helped us enjoy our love of 8mm for so many years. Derann Films to this day are sadly missed..

Hey, does that sign still exist on the side on the top or side of the building, that says "Derann' and has Mickey Mouse on it?

If I were in England, I would ask permission from whoever owns the building, and take that sign down for posterity! Is that sign still on the building?

I think it was painted on the wall itself. Its still on google street.

Perhaps someone who lives near could take a few photos for the history books.
