Has anybody got their copy of the Master and Commander feature yet, or have Derann pulled out of releasing this film?

Hi Paul, Had a letter from Derann today to say that M&C was now ready and in stock. They just wanted to know how I wanted to settle up for the outstanding money before they shipped it to me. I had paid a deposit before to make sure I got a copy from the first run etc. Yes it's in stock and ready for ordering. BTW I had the pleasure of seeing the final, all be it mute, for my comments with regard the final grading along with Keith Wilton and John Clancy. The print wasnt bad at all so if they have now done the tweaks we asked for it should be a real cracker. We decided not to rush Derann as that way we knew that we would get a really nice job done on this release. If Derann get the sales on this release then it might convince them that sales of up to date fetaures are not a thing of the past.

And my GS-1200 has come back from Bill Parsons (projector repair supremo) just in time to screen the new release.
Kevin, you have just got to see the light output from the HTI lamp. Ugo wasn't kidding. And bring your sunglasses.

That's the plan. It needs soap testing before we finally commit it to a show at the 50th BFCC. Bill's not converted one before so it's a learning process for all of us and there's bound to be some stuff to finish off or look into.
Certainly this puts out a brighter light than the standard xenon and once we've got a finished product then perhaps others will be able to benefit from the research that's gone into it. Having said that, it's not exactly cheap.
Any time you fancy a look just let me know.

No, "soap" test. I'm taking the machine to "Duds 'n Suds" this afternoon.
Thursday evening it is then. The projector should be really clean by then.
By the way, my copy of Master and Commander arrived this morning and I've run the first two reels already. Pin-sharp print with good stereo sound.

Kevin/John I'm pleased to hear that the lab still accepts instructions regarding grading - I always used to be interested when Derek talked about this aspect of new releases. Could you please provide an insight into this by saying a few words about how detailed the requests are, and how the relevant parts of the film are identified. I don't suppose the film is completely broken down on a shot by shot basis? Adrian

This was a bit of an exceptional case as it was a feature release and Master and Commander has a lot of night and below deck scenes which are naturally very dark in nature.
I only watched my print on a standard GS-1200 yesterday and had many interruptions. However, my first impression is this is amongst the best of the Super 8 feature releases; I'll report further when I've had a more serious look but for now with the exception of a bit of neg dust at a few reel ends it gives a good first impression.

That is interesting.
I bought the full length feature of "The Abyss" about eight years ago. The underwater scenes are stunningly beautiful in scope, as well as the odd lighting for alien scenes. But there are a few scenes inside the coridors of the submersable that are very dark, where all you can see are the lights of the people's eyes. On video, the lighting is much better for these particular scenes (still a beautiful print...I'll do a review later).
With that said, I'm very glad that Derann is grading the scenes differently for different lighting situatiions now.

Nick, this was a bit of a one off. With The Abyss it was probably the usual one reading grades all. Because this new release is the first feature from Derann for years and a substantial gamble on their part it was important to get it as good as possible, particularly as Master and Commander is very dark in places. You'll find the Super 8 print is still very dark in some scenes but that's actually how it is on 35mm - it's supposed to be like that. However, there were a few places, notably throughout reel 6, where it was going to be very difficult to get an acceptable one reading grades all result. The end result on that reel is fabulous and I can appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into grading that at the labs.

Thanks John,
I also noticed that the 35mm print of Abyss was darker (in those same scenes) than the video, while still a little lighter than the super 8 print. I guess its all the unlimited stuff they can do with color grading when dealing with video.
Kevin and I looked at reel 6 of Master and Commander together last night on my newly converted HTI machine. It punches too much light through it and actually looks better on the standard GS.
On the extras section of the 2 disc DVD edition they show how the look of the film was achieved - it was actually done in the computer to mute down the colours and make the whole film darker and more realistic; a grey wash was applied to the finished product and this has come across onto Super 8 but with the colours slightly warmer (which is rather nice).
And by the way, turned the sound up a bit last night and it was very good. Not quite as good as the latest Matrix extract which is possibly the best I've heard.

Oh boy and was John newly converted GS with it's HTI lamp a real knockout. I can tell you here that a lux reading of 1000 lux accross a 52" screen with the f1.1 lens is superb. I thought to myself that this is only a little more output than I have on my Elmo Xenon and then realised (as I was getting on Kermit to ride home) that in fact John still has the 3 blade shutter fitted to his GS. I am going to set my machine up the same as Johns to see how the Xenon compares to this Bill Parsons conversion. I just hope that John doesnt cause fade on his films by bleaching away the dyes with so much light

Kevin, I assume you're kidding about the light output bleaching away film dyes but just for curiosity's sake - that's not really something that actually happens, is it? (I honestly don't know) If it is, I'm getting rid of my entire stable of projectors and sticking with watching movies on my sound editor

No Jan, dont worry I was just kidding. Its the first time however that I had to watch a film with my motor bike helmet on so that I could make use of the tinted visor
