As we are all collectors of films on cine are there any collectors who only collect certain subjects, i.e, musical only or cartoon only etc. Maybe some only collect features?

For me, it's science fiction and horror films from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, preferably super 8mm features. Also any films with animation by the great Ray Harryhausen. Recent acquisitions include WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) with Bela Lugosi; MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949); and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956). Still looking for KING KONG and 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (my current "grail" films).

And I'm also collecting select WB cartoons, primarily from the 40s and early 50s. Especially interested in WW2 themes and Bugs Bunny.

Thanks for asking. How about you? SGB

If anybody knows me well, they know my specialty is optical super 8 features, (which now number 31), but I do tend to collect the odd cartoon.

For some reason, i have a passion for collecting the Universal/castle film "Woody Woodpeckers", more for the fact that it's a challenge to actually find copies that are in good shape, not pinky, which is, really, a hell of a challenge!

Railroad Films!

Old World or New World
Sound or Silent
Color or Black and White
Recent or Ancient
Commercially made or My own

-Doesn't Matter!, as long as there are trains, especially narrow gauge ones.

This is a specialty, but not exclusive. I have plenty of other kinds of films as well. I enjoy animated films, nature films and travelogues too.

I like the epics of the 50's and 60's and theres plenty on 8mm though I buy secondhand because of the running time and prices. Also collect the good old British films like The Dam Busters, Cruel sea and the comedys like Doctor in the House, Genevieve etc., Also buy trailers and advert reels though not the modern ones because they dont apeal to me much. There is plenty of shorts available and if I like them would look out on the secondhand lists. I do have 16mm but again a couple of features only any topic and tend to look out for any interesting shorts. Dont have the storage space to collect 16mm. Have lots of the Disney extracts spooled up and they go down well with film shows. Also like the R & H musicals like Carousel thats a nice print. Unfotunatly the King and I copies I have seen are not very good on 8mm and the one I bought secondhand I resold at no loss. The Sound of Music I have is the abridged version that I bought at Ealing for £30 on the bring and buy which was a steal because it was a good price over the dealer prices and the copy is like new.

My Brother likes the older films,(particuly westerns) cartoons and Laural & Hardys.
Some good titles in his collection include third man,dam busters, above us the waves, gone with the wind The last command to name a few. Myself, a bit of a mix really, trailers by the bucket load, horror, adventure and the 600ft and 3 x 400ft cutdowns. Recntly delving into the scope features. For me, i would like many more full features but unlike my Bro i dont have so much spare dosh to splash out on.
Between the two of us we do have a healthy collections and a very good mix.

Hopefully on Saturady at the BFCC i shall add to our list. [Wink]

I am quite new at the momment, so...no speciality unless...collecting cheap stuff [Frown] that can be sent to Fiji with the lowest shipping cost. I can compete with you guys, in terms of spending money for this hobby (if the shipping cost is counted), but am not dare enough to tell my collection. It is true that sometimes I asked dealer for C/D grade in their list [Wink] [Razz]

Scratches, splices, pinkish are OK to me so...no speciality except building up my collection....shamefull heh?

Collin, when you are talking abridged version of Sound of Music, is that the 400 reel one or the 90 minutes cut down?

cheers,

Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton and L&H shorts/features... Classic sci-fi and drama... Early dramas/epics such as D.W.Griffith's Intolerance... Also like action and kung-fu films (hmm, I've yet to watch my print of Carquake actually)... and animation is really big with me, there's the classic Looney Tunes cartoons and the newer Roger Rabbit ones, Disney shorts, Ub Iwerks and Fleischer Studios classics including a feature print of Hoppity Goes To Town... oh, yes, and Secret of Nimh too. I collect anything that I like, with a preference for cut-downs and short subjects... How about that for an answer? [Wink]

But one of "sub-collection" within the collection is material related to amusement parks and rides...

Winbert, nothing wrong with what you collect at all, at the end of the day my collection was just 3 400ft cutdowns for a very long time, some of spliced, pink or scratched films go for bargin prices and if thats what builds your collection then good for you mate. Although i understand many people will not tolerate a blemish on a print, my Brother and myself have many films which do have a few marks on them but rarly let it distract us from the film. Keep building that collection Winbert and be very proud of the titles you own no matter what [Wink]

Hi Winbert Just to answer your question on The Sound of Music. It was the abridged 3X 600ft version. Still has the film plot but without the padding. Most people say they prefer this version. I do have the 400ft version and that did cost me about £30.00 in the late seventies> Hard to think how much that was in todays prices and how much you would get now for that film. I agree with Tom on this I had only a few 400ft digest when I converted to Super8 Sound and they were in the bargain basket at portland films because that was what I could only aford. At the end of the day its what you enjoy and nothing is perfect. Things have inproved on 8mm quality but the early days of prints where variable from batch to batch. Two friends of mine who used to work at Portland films in London when they had 3 shops in the 80's and I used to sit in the shop with them so have had some experience of film collectors bringing back there 400ft digest conplaining of the quality. They used to sell the CineMax silent projector then to show silent films. It was run by elastic bands and was a pile of crap in terms of quality but people used to come in the shop and buy it. How times have changed. When portland films finally went over to video there was plenty of bargains on Super8 and I made sure I purchased all the MGM 3 parters and mountain features that were going for peanut money. Then the shop closed and my mates had to find a different job. By the way they dont do 8mm anymore.

I do have the full 3 million foot version of the Sound of Music (thanks Ian ) and can't begin to imagine what I would do with all the time I might save with the cut down.

Like you Trevor I indulge in the odd british comedy but I am very keen on the old B/W's of the 40's 50's and 60's. One of the most moving yet simple films was A Patch of Blue (thanks Derran)

Looking forward to Saturday at Ealing
