Elmo.. I remember the first time that I heard of a projector called an Elmo..it was in 1977 I think. I remember thinking it was a toy projector of some sort. Does anyone know where that name came from? It doesn't sound Japanese at all. Sony, Panasonic, Sankyo.. they all sound Japanese. But Elmo? And Bauer...that means farmer in German. Another wierd one. Just thinking aloud on this COLD Nyc Sunday afternoon...

My greatest objection to the name is when it's mentioned with my pre-schooler within earshot he starts talking about that really irritating Muppet!
(-at least there was never a projector named "Barney"!)

I think "ELMO" comes from .......Link
Bauer was the name of the founder of the company "EUGEN BAUER" in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in 1907. The Robert Bosch Company bought the Bauer company later.

Hi Alan I can't help you where the Elmo name originated but did come across a very interesting add from a English magazine Home Movies and Home Talkies Dec 1937, The mighty ELMO The 16mm projector that incorporates all the refinements demanded of a modern machine together with improvements and additions that "THE OTHERS DO NOT POSSESS" So Alan Elmo has been around for almost 70years, amazing! I'm sure that some 16mm machines were built under licensce in this country, as I remember seeing an advert in an old cine mag for "Ilford Elmo's", I may be wrong, as 16mm history is not my forte, but I believe I am right on this one.

Alan
I seem to remember reading somewhere that ELMO stould for something like - Electric Light (something) Optics. It was on a website somewhere. The official website states that they have been producing optical equipment since 1921.
It´s still a silly name though

I have just mailed Elmo to get more info on their history and how the name came about. Mike spot on about the name but I cant remember what it stood for. It was something like: Electric Light & Mechanical Optical Co.
If I get some info I will post it on here for all to read.

Would Elmo Lincoln have anything to do with it? Who was he? The first silent movie star to portray Tarzan AND the films were once available on Regular8. Anyone got any??

Just had an email back form Elmo in Germany and they have told me that Elmo stands for: Electricity Light Machine Organisation.
They sent me a few powerpoint slides giving a brief history and showing their current range. I will put that info on here later for other interested members to read.

I think the name Elmo is just "okay". It stands out in crowd! It instills visions of greatness in engineering, intestinal fortitue and stamina.....hmmmmmmm, upon further examination, it does suck!
I now have the current History Direct from Elmo themselves. I have chatted to a guy from Elmo and he was very surprised to hear of the great folowing that Elmo still has for its now finished range of cine gear.
I have sent the PDF to Brad so hopefully he will place it in the Manuals section for you guys to have a browse at.

*chuckle* Does sound like it, huh? Actually Kraftwerk released an album Electric Cafe in 1986 featuring a track of the same name (along with the popular Musique Non Stop)... me, I happen to be thinking of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) right now... somehow I don't see Kraftwerk doing "Sankyo Surge" or "Bauer Buzz" at that... oh, nevermind, those sound more like caffeine-spiked soda drinks anyhow!!

Would you believe I grew up on Elmo Street? Yes it's true! One of those "good ole'" down home southern names here in the U.S. It is now under one of the Atlanta International Airport runways. Glad I don't live there anymore. While I lived there my dad bought a Kodak Brownie projector and camera.
