I could have a major problem with my EUMIG MARK S (mag/optic) super 8 projector ....

I don't know what the technical name is for this part, but it's the brass piece (or copper, I'm not sure) on my model of projector, that gives you the square image on the screen, without it, you have just lots of light no nice square image.

Anyhow, it's comne loose, evidently, the glue that held it on has expired. It's peeling off, and I believe that the slight but noticaable scratching on one of my optical super 8's is due to that. before now, it had never scratched at all!

This projector has absolutely awesome optical sound and I'd hate to part with it due to an annoying scratch problem.

HELP!!!!!!

Osi

I think you are talking about part of the gate assembly, the gate masking to be precise. Can you upload a photo of the faulty Item? I have a few Eumig spares & may be able to supply you with a guide plate.

Yeah, the gate masking! Sadly, I don't have the computer techno to do photo's, but this is the part that has the "S" on it, and it's the half that's closest to the lense. One of the nice thing about these Eumig's is that the whole film gate assembly could come out. I wonder if most Eumig's had the same film gate parts, (interchangeable?)

Hello Osi
I have the two Super 8 gate parts you need that may well fit your machine as these came off a 'Prinz Compere S' projector which was a re-badged Eumig Mark S if my memory serves me well. Gate assys. in Eumigs do vary between model ranges unfortunately.
We'll have to 'reverse ID' these as you don't have the means to put up a digital picture of your ones so here are some pics of the ones I have.

If you think they are the same as yours I'm happy to send them FOC just let me know your address details in a PM.
Fingers crossed!

Kev, those Eumig parts allways look so well engineered. Maybe it was this engineering standard and the low prices for their machines which finished Eumig off.

I have a promo film on super8 produced by Eumig for their Distributors which shows the Eumig factory and how some of this gear was manufactured. They made their own machines and even had equipment for making their own lenses.

For those that may be interested Keith Wilton has included this film in The Men Behind The Movies pt2

It does appear to be the same exact type! I was comparing it to my parts and they appear to be identical. Question: Do they have an "S" on the very side of the part? (as they had seperate replacement parts for super 8 as well as standard 8mm assembly), as these would need to be for super 8 assembly.

By the way, TOTALLY AWESOME!!

I have the same Eumig optical and magnetic unit and I only can use the optical part of the unit. If you use magnetic sound prints they scratch badly. I had it in for repair and they cleaned the soundhead area but it still scratched. I think it may very well be the sound pads that have some debris. So anyway I avoid ANY magnetic prints on this unit. Have not had a scratch problem with my optical prints. But I am concerned that when the sound exciter bulb burns out I won't be able to find another one.

Hello Osi
The packet will be posted today via Airmail so expect delivery usually within one week sometimes sooner from UK to USA. It's a pleasure to help and I hope these bits cure the problem, let us know how it goes please.
Tom - sorry to hear your machine is scratching - I looked through my come-in-handy parts box for any other Eumig bits but I can't find any other guides or soundhead parts, sorry. I'm sure there was a post a while ago where the method for dismantling the soundhead on Eumigs was described to allow you to get to the mag. film scratching area?

Thanks Kevin. Yeah, I only show my actual address when I can't get ahold of someone otherwise. That reminds me, I need to change my address on the forum, as I have moved, (you have the new address Kevin!)

Also sad to hear that his machine is scratching bad on the magnetic sound. I don't use the magnetic sound on my Eumig, as I have a stereo super 8mm that's to die for.

I was really lucky when I bought my Eumig, as the seller was a true collector and have a whole replacement sound head assembly for my Eumig, (which is easily replaceable)!

I am doubly sure that it is that film gate part that is doing the scratching, as I put on a print I don't care about and while it wouldn't scratch going forward, it must have been slightly catching on that "film gate apeture" (there, that's my technical name) as it ran backwards. That Eumig has such beautiful optical sound I will retool it like a man possessed with his 65 Ford pick-up truck, (any american man will understand THAT analogy!)

Yo Kev!

I recieved the package today! They fit just fine, I'll test the projection tonight with an unscratched piece of film, but it looks like it'll be just fine!
