I recently purchased a set of 16mm rewinds to convert to super 8mm. The first thing I did was with my Dremil grind the square spindles until they were round. Then I glued reel adapters to the spindles. When I put a reel on i use another adapter on the outside which makes up the space from the length of the spindle. Further, it allows the reel lock to fit between the slot in the adapter keeping the reel from falling off. Because of the ratio of the gears I can rewind a 1200' reel in about 30 seconds! Faster than any projector. Check out the photos.

That's pretty ingenious! You can get metal adapters but the ones I've seen were quite expensive as they were custom made. A little bit of handiwork and you've got something just as good for almost free! [Smile]
