Just got a mint Revere 85 for $10.00 bucks. Lamp is out but it runs, but makes a noise unlike anything I have heard out of my other projectors.. It is kinda like when you put the playing card on the spokes of your bicycle to make the "motor noise" when you rode and the card hit the spokes. It is a deeper sound, but sorta like that. Is this normal? Thanks

Nope, just got it. It doesn't make that noise when the clutch is not engaged. I don't have a manual yet. It appears there are oil holes on the top. I am not sure what sort of oil to use.

Thanks Richard, I'll pick up some of that oil. I bought a manual on Ebay and will wait until I get it to see where to oil. In the meantime, I searched Google for the manual and came across a YouTube video showing how to use the Revere 85. It sounds alot like mine when running so maybe that is just the noise they make.

I have two 85s and neither are real noisy.Yes,while 3 in 1 isn't the perfect oil for a good running machine, sometimes if gears have more than average wear,it will quiet the machine down.

What is the lens quality on these machines? Brightness? Lamp life? Don't these older projectors give off alot of heat with 750 wattage?

My Revere 80 is also pretty noisy, and I think most of it is gear and bearing noise. You have to realize that these projectors were manufactured at a time when silent nylon gears were not yet being used. And yes the lamp puts out a terrific amount of heat and the screen brightness is pretty poor (makes you really appreciate modern low voltage halogen lamps!). Also the lens is uncoated and not very well corrected. The projector really is a poor mans Bell and Howell Regent(606H in the UK). A great machine to look at, but there are far better regular 8mm projectors out there such as the Bolex M8, Bolex 18-5, or Eumig P8

I didn't buy it to use for showing film, just for display and because it was so inexpensive. Still, I like them functional. I have all models of the Bolex 18-5s and a couple of Sankyo 2000H Dualux for viewing.
