Wasn't this originally a colour film? Are there any colour releases on S8?

I think there was a trailer on S/8 Michael, but I've not come across
it in colour feature form on 8mm.There was a feature in 16mm
B/W a few weeks ago that Ian was selling.

Yes was in colour. In the 78/79 Rank Hire catalogue its listed as B/W at £15. No colour version listed.

Another one 'Curse Of The Werewolf' is in both colour £12 B/W £10. Does seem odd not to have them in colour.

There were some B/W of colour features in the Columbia 16mm
like "War of the Worlds",which I always thought odd, as surely
colour was the whole point of that particular film.

With 16mm, Hugh, a lot of the B&W prints of colour titles which find their way into collectors hands were TV prints, used in the pre-colour TV days.

I would say you're right Michael, I would reckon a B/W print is
better than no print at all if it's a film you like.

I don't think I could bring myself to watch a B/W version of a Colour film anymore than I could bring myself to watch a Colour version of a B/W film... in the 21st Century why would you, unless of course either were the only surviving footage [Wink]

Best,
Rick

Thought TV used 35mm in the UK, almost sure the BBC did. ITV may have used both? Both did film on 16mm.

Surprised that 'Brides Of Dracula' was never a Derann "White Box special" Derek once told me it was a film he would like. Think he was "sounding out to see if it would sell"

The 'ol Derek did a lot of that, which is sound business sense if
you don't want to end up with shelves of unsold stock.I remember
having a conversation with one of the Derann staff and I suggested some Hammer film titles, mainly "The Reptile", this was
when "Raise the Titanic" had made it's debut on S/8,only to be
told that they didn't think they would sell, this was before Derek
was telling me at Blackpool, that "Scars of Dracula" had disappointed him in print quality, but he was going to re release
it full length.Which he did along with a slew of Hammer horrors
which we are all grateful for.I have no doubt if the man had
still been with us, he would have seen "Brides of Dracula" on
the gauge.

I'd guess that Derek could never obtain a master that he felt was good enough for a release of 'Brides'.

Hi David,

The BBC, ITV and CH4 all used both 35mm and 16mm prints of acquired product, ideally Low Contrast prints for telecine transfer use although there were a lot of I.B. prints in their systems too.

Mainly 35mm Pos prints for feature films and a lot of USA series (e.g DALLAS, BILKO, KOJAK, CHEERS, MUNSTERS, BEWITCHED, etc, etc, etc) but on occasions 16mm reduction prints were also used depending upon availability of 35mm prints and costs Vs runs.

Best,
Rick

Thats true Ricky, but the B/W of colour turned up in the hire
catalogues of 16mm.I still have a few in my collection on all
gauges. In a lot of cases thats all that was available.Even though
the print on sale now is a B/W of colour, I would rather sit through
that, even though its not a favourite of mine, than any amount
of what passes for horror these days.

Totally agree with Hugh about modern horror films, you can't beat a good 'Hammer' film. Have quite a few in my collection mainly from Derann, also one from Powell Films. On 'The Reptile' print excellent though the night scenes are in a FULL moon on my print. Whereas 'Twins Of Evil' they are SO dark, had to fit 20k watt lamp [Cool] It was cheap though. You could project 'Brides' through a red filter [Eek!]

I agree there David, I was a bit taken aback with the night scenes
on "The Reptile", it looked like the middle of the day, I haven't
seen it in a while on TV, and I don't have the DVD to compare,
Maybe a fault with the labs.On the other two Hammers, I heard
about TWINS & CIRCUS being dark, so I stuck with the Walton
prints.A shame that BRIDES didn't make it to S/8 as there are
many fans of this film out there and I'm sure it would have sold
well.Still on the whole,us Hammer fans haven't done so bad over the years with what we have got.
